ESTIMATES FOR THE YEAE. ;Fire Brigade estimates;'fpr, the, currentreal' were last night referred by the City Council to its Finance Committee. In presenting the figures, the Fire Brigade superintendent (Mr. W. S. O'Brien) pointed out that, through the non-delivery of a motor hose-wagon ordered last year, the payment would have to be provided for in this year's estimates. The amount provided for under last year's estimateswas .£7OOO, . and the amount expended The only increase in ordinary, expenditure was under "wages," which provided for the appointment of five new men to the permanent staff. In conclusion, .the superintendent pointed out that he ivns not asking the committee, to sanction any expenditure that was not absolutely necessary to keep fhe brigade equipped to meet the demands of a growing city. Receipts are estimated nt £550, as compared with 4s. last year. Ordinary- expenditure is set down at .£5565, as compared with «ESGOI os. Bd. last year. Expenditure on new plant, etc., totals -52829, as compared with £389 7s. 2d. last year. Principal items in this year's expenditure are:—Motor hose wagon and 55ft. escape, JS9DO; motor hose wagon and 35ft. escape. JEB2S; one thouirand feet canvns hose, £50; sundry works (including alterations at Central Station, J9O), .£193; extension fire alarm system, ,£BS; increase in salaries and appointment of additional man, .£560. Ordinary expenditure, together with tho purchase of additional assets, will account this year for <£619-l, as against .£5093 7s, lOci. laat year.
