The Hon. J. Carroll, the Hon. J. A. Millar, the Hon. G. Fowlds, and the Hon. A. T. Ngata are in town. The Hon. D. Buddo returns this morning from n (lying visit to his constituency. The Hon. E. M'Konzie and the Hon. T. Mackenzie arc in Otago. ' Mr..AV. F. Massey, Leader of the Opposition, is to speak ,at Akaroa to-night, and leaves for Wellington on Saturday. Ho will-return to Christchurch either before the opening of Parliament or early in the session, and deliver a political address.—Press Association. Yesterday members of the Canterbury A. and P. Association, together with a large number of Christchurch business men, escorted Lord Islington over the freezing works belonging to the Christchnrch Meat Company. Those present included Mr. Massev, Leader of the Opposition, M,r...C. A. |C. Hardy, M.P., and the Hon. H." F. Wigrani, M.L.C.—Press- Association. Mr. H. ICaihau, M.P., is in town. The Hon. Mr. Mahuta, M.L.C., who is at his home at Huntly, Waikato, is reported to bo somewhat seriously ill. Mr. H. Keeling Roberts, of Cape Town, leaves for Sydney by the Mocraki to-day to connect there with the Zealandia for Vancouver. His destination is Liverpool. Mr. Jas. Mackenzie, Commissioner of Crown Lands for the AA 7 ellingtou district, who recently recovered from an illness, has suffered a relapse and is again confined to his bed. Mr. Harry Herbert, a member of tho Anderson Dramatic Company, died of double pneumonia in an Auckland hospital on Wednesday last. Mr. Herbert, who was last in Wellington with tho 11. R. Roberts-Beatrice Day "Pete" Company, was a native of Auckland, and had only been on the stage about twelve months'. AVhen last in Wellington ho performed at the Orphans Club. The Rev. 11. Van Staveren, minister of the Wellington Hebrew Congregation, who has been on a toui , of Southern New Zealand and Australia for the benefit of his health, was in Sydney recently, and attended tho Great Synagogue (says the Sydney "Daily Telegraph"). When seen after tho service, Mr. Van Staveren expressed very great pleasure at having been prosent at tho service, which, he considered, compared most favourably with any he had attended. He said that not only should tho Jews of Australasia be exceedingly proud of the beautiful Synagogue and service at Sydney, but that tho Jews in the Old World should be gratified to know that at the Antipodes there was such a splendid example of Judaism ns was furnished by the Synagogue and service in Sydney.
His Honour the Chief Justice, Sir Robert Stout, left for Auckland by Ihe Main Trunk line yesterday, en route for the Cook Mauds.
