(From Our. Sreclnl Correspondent.) Mastertoii, May 29, A number, of friends of Mr. T. Porter, who has relinquished the control of tho Club Cafe (formerly tho Club Hotel), and intends taking up his residence in Wellington for a time, met him at the cafa on Saturday evening, and made him a' presentation. A poll of ratepayers in the Alfredtoa Riding of tho Mastcrton County is to bo taken on Saturday next on the proposal to raise a loan of *£350 for the renewal of a bridge over the To Hoe Stream, on the Alfredton-Weber road. The chief attraction in the Wairarapa. on the King's Birthday will be the trotting meeting at Greytown. It is not unlikely, also that a considerable number of j Mastertonians will avail themselves of tho i railway excursions on that day to visit the Exhibition in Wellington. The friends of Mr. John Hessey will; regret to hear that ho lias been com-/ polled to enter a private hospital to nn-: dergo an operation. Fortunately, the' operation is only of a minor character. Thero are (according to the census'returns) a larger number of uninhabited houses in the Wairarapa electorate at present than in tho Mastcrton electorate. The complete census returns show that tho population of the Wairarapa electorate is 11,655, of which 6531 are males and 5101 females. Staff-Captain Newbold, of the headquarters staff of the Salvation Army in Wellington, was a visitor to Mastcrton yesterday. Several Masterton farmers have signified their intention of competing at tho ploughing match' which is to bo held under the auspices of the Wairarapa A. and P. Society. Surprise is expressed that a similar competition has' not been instituted by tho Mastcrton A. and P. Association. In tho early days tho ploughing match used to constitute a very important day. Messrs. J. C. Cooper, H. Kevins, H. Morrison, and R. B. M'Konzie will represent .the Mastcrton district at tho Wellington Provincial Conference of the Farmers' Union, which opens in Woodvilla to-morrow. Mr. Kevins will introduce tho question of the provision of mailfor country settlers. It is hoped that the bacon works ia' connection with (he Wellington Farmers' Meat Company will be open for tho reception of pigs by the mouth of Soptem- : ber. Tho Matahiwi School has been closed for some days, owing to tho indisposition of the teacher. Thirteen new members were elected at a meeting of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society on Saturday last. The society has now a membership of over 250. . A.pipe band has been formed in connection with tho Wairarapa Caledonian Socicy. Mr. W. Pearson, of Carterton, has been appointed to tho'position of pipe-majov, and Mr. Walter Sutherland has been elected sergeant.
