Yesterday Detectives Kemp and Hammond arrested a young man, who will appear at Hie Magistrate's Court this morning charged with theft of jewellery valued at £3 10s., (ho property of Edith Clark, and theft of a revolver valued at il 10s., the property of Allan Howden.

His Honour the Chief Justice, Sir, Kobert Stout, leaves for Auckland en route to the Cool; Islands' by the Main Tiuivk train on Thursday, to preside at the trial of one Wigmore, for alleged murder of a native. His Honour has been formally appointed Chief .Justice of the High Court of the Cook Islands—a local tribunal having exclusive jurisdiction in cases of murder and manslaughter. Tho Judicature Act of New Zealand is not in force in the Cook Islands, hi a largs number of matters the lesidents of the Cook Islands are governed by their own local laws. Mr. Waldcgravc, Under-Secretary lor Justice, and permanent head in New Zealand of tho Cool; Islands administration, will also proceed to liarotonga by the same steamer as the Chief Justice, on official business. Sir Kobert Stout and Mr. Waldcgravc leave Auckland by the s.s. Aorangi on Saturday next.

Tho Minister for Railways (the non. J. A. Millar) has informed Mr. \V. 11. Field, M.P., that the Government will grant a >£ for £■ subsidy up to .£250 towards the cost of constructing .swimming baths at Levin as a Coronation memorial. It was at the request of Mr. B. It. Gardener, Mayor of Levin, that Mr. Field moved ill tho matter.
Tho disagreement of some time back between the Wellington "United Furniture Trades Union and the Labour Department is to be reviewed this morning by a deputation which the union is sending to interview tho Minister for Labour (the Hon. J. A. Millar). It is stated that for the last 13 months the union has preferred to do its own work in regard to inspection of factories and breaches of awards, and the deputation will ask for facilities to do so in the future, independently of the Department. It is also the intention of tho deputation to point out certain anomalies in the Workers' Compensation Act, and to ask for amendment to same. Mr. Millar, as Minister for Railways, is also to be asked to make provision whereby, when cabinetmakers have occasion to travel to any job in a provincial town, their tools —fit sonic cases a matter of a hundredweight or more—shall be- carried freight free. Mr. W. H. Field, M.P., will introduce tho deputation.

Latest Australian files contain news of the tragic death of a Xcw Zealandcr. It appears that last week the bud}; of a man named Arthur Simpson was found lying faco downwards in an irrigation channel near Kcrang (Victoria). Tho police, on searching tho clothing, found a letter apparently written by deceased giving directions regarding tho disposal of his effects and intimating (bat tho body could be given to the doctors for dissection if they so desired, and stating that ho had been addicted to drink of lata years, the reason for which might be apparent in a tumor or some atrophy. Other papers indicated that deceased was a chemist by profession, and a recent arrival from 'Dunediu.
