CULTIVATION OF MUSIC.
TRINITY COLLEGE PRESENTATIONS. In the Sydney Street Hall last night the annual presentation of prizes, medals, and certificates won in the Wellington Centres at the Trinity College examinations was mttde. Tho hall was packed. The formal presentation was made by Mr. J. G. W. Aitken, who, in an addres?, said a word in praise of the cultivation of music. The object of Trinity College, Mr. Aitken went on to say, was to develop the musical'talents of the rising generation. There had been an increase in the numbers of students in tho practice and theory examinations this year. New subdivisions had been made; instead of four, there were now seven. The teachers seemed to think tho change was a very great advantage, and the pupils seemed to feel that they had bettor scope and more hope of success than under tne old system. He was very sorry to learn that the teachers seemed to be a little bit afraid of the higher local division. Ho didn't see why they should be, and thought they should face the position and strive to bring their pupils up to the higher level. He informed tho gathering that Mr. Schilska was coming back again to conduct the examinations. Tho prizes won were then presented to the winners or their proxies. The results of the examinations have already been published. In addition to those published, it was announced last night that national cash prizes of- ,£5 each for examinations in theory and practice had been won by Cecilia Dwyer, Priscilla Miller, and Gillie Gibbs. During the evening the following items were rendered:—Pianoforte'solo, "Les Papillons," Miss Cecilia Dwyer (senior medallist); song, "Childhood's Garden,'' Miss Agnes Jennings (intermediate medallist); and pianoforte folo, "La Harp Eolienne," Miss Mary Braddock (junior medallist).
