Mr.'T.'C. Duncklcy, who recently sold his business here to' Mr. Farghor, has purchased a business in Morrinsville. Tlio departure of Air. and Airs. Duncklcy from Shannon', wlicro they liavc resided for a number of years, is generally regretted. Mr. E. Perry lias bought Mr. Dunckky's residence, in Stout Street.

On Friday night in the dining-room of W]iitaunui,\Ltd., Mr. TI. first's, managing, director of the company, presided .at tlio first of a series of fortnightly "socials," which are to. bo held during the winter. ■There was a large 'attendance of settlers and employers, mid the hall was artistically decorated. Included oh .the bill for the evening were Airs. Hall, Miss Pago, (l'almerston North), Miss M'Donald, Messrs. Nicholas, Yates, and Bayliss. Miss M'Donald was accompanist, The proceeds are to be given over to the l'almerston North Hospital.

There was. a good attendance at the Druids' Hall on Tuesday evening, when papers on a variety rif subjects were read by members of the Literary and Debating Society. Sister Moody.Bell contributed a suggestive essay on. the. future developwent of Shannon. Mr. Train-fr gave a rending 011 astronomy. Air. M'Millan's contribution had reference to (he advantages to Ixi derived from a more general knowledge of Esperanto. The Rev. Mr. ,T, 1?. M'Kenzie's article was on the "Good Old Days." A lively discussion followed (lie reading of each essay. Amongst those, who took part were:—Messrs. .Gunning, Barclay, Kinsman, Gardner, Clayton,' Trainer, M'Millan, and others. Next Tuesday evening the subject of debate will bo:—"That the writer has had a greater influence on mankind than tho warrior or statesman." Tho leaders will be tho Rev. Mr.'Palmer, Rev. Mr. Coatsworth (Foxton), and Mr. W. H. Gunning, The employees of Whifaunui, Ltd., have formed a football club, and a match between them and the Miranui employees is to take place shortly.
