Gold Circle runs at Wangamii,
I'auinis was no doubt unlucky at Ilastings, and it will be no surprise if ho shows improved form in his next essay.
Owing to tho suspension of R. Barlow, the horses under his care have been transferred to the stable of H. Russell.
Tho form of Gaby on (ho second day of the Unworn mooting is most difficult lo reconcile with her showing on tho first day, when tho Menschikoir' mare boiled homo in front of u fairly strong Held. Tho second tiny sho did not begin well, ami seemed to slip about n good deal, while the going was very different. Still tho other horses had all to get through Ihe same going. H is wonderful hew fome horses arc quito at home in slushy going, while others are unaWo lo act. The form was a complete puzzler to Trainer Tilley, and lie straightway withdrew his other charge Mortite, who was accepted for in. tho concluding event.
Tho North Olngo Jockey Club's meeting opens at Oamaru on Wednesday.
H. Gray was asked to go north to ride Domino iii the Umpire Handicap at Takapuna, but owing to pressure of private business, he was unable to make the trip, and nominated A. Wliittaker as his suecessor. The rivalry between the two horsemen for supremacy on the flat must be of tho most friendly nature, as Whittaker is in the lead, and Gray thus helped him further ahead.
lho consistent but unlucky Piriwai (boult—lmpati) scored another minor place at the Egmnnt meeting last week. Mr. E. J. Mathews, who bred the filly, was recently asked to put a price ou her, but lie declined to do so.
P. Howard will vido Loch Fyne at tho Wanganui meeting. . . .
After the last Manawatu meeting, it was reported that Eiya had been sold to a Dunedin owner, but subsequently the sale fell. through. At the conclusion of the Hastings meeting; the Mahaki gelding was purchased by Air. 11. Syrnons, and will in future race in his name. Ho is'not to lcavo H. Hickoy's stables.
■ People who saw Napper perform at Hastings arc strongly of the opinion that tho Hon. J. D. Ormond's representative has a good-future before him. He ,did not look nearly ready at Hastings, and in his first effort ho was jumping very carefully, and finished well back. The (second day ho was a much-improved horse, and sifter being well behind the leaders four furlongs from home, he put in a great run, and finished just behind the placed horses. • ,
The Wangamii-owned D'Nil, half-brother to the useful Kuroki, who went wrong some eighteen months ago, and sir.ee then has been turned out, is again doing good work over the battens, and will make his reappearance carrying silk at the Wanganui meeting on Wednesday and Thursday next. It can hardly be expected that the qucorly-namcd seldiiK' will i<» r,< >"'s best in his first race after each t. long spell.
Prior to the Hawera fixture, A. Wliittaker was displaced by H. Gray at tho head of the list of winning jockeys, but as tho Auckland crack rbdo two winners at Egmont, and followed this up by a. similar performance at Takapuna, ho ia again No. 1 on the- liet.
When tho weights for the Great Northern Hurdles appeared an Auckland writer gave it as his opinion that Ribstono Pippin was thrown in with only one pound abovo tho minimum. If this is so what must the public think of the Australianbred gelding's chances in the Kaitoki Hack Hurdles at Wanganui, in which ho has only lOst. 101b. to carry. The secretary of the South Wairarapa Trotting Club notifies that the dale, of the club's meeting lias been altered to June 3. FIXTURES. May 21—Takaftuna J.C. Winter. Mm 24 and '£>— Wangamil J.C. Wintof. May 24 and 25-North Otago J.C. Winter.' Juno 2 and 3—Dunedin J.C. Winter . June 3 and 5-Olaki Maori B.C. Winter. Juno 3, 5, and 7—Auckland B.C. Great Northern Steeplechase. June. 21 and 22—Hnwke's Bay J.C. Winter, Juno 28 and 29—Napier Park B.C. Winter. July'G and 7—Gisborno B.C. Winter.
