The report of the New Zealand Paper Mills Company for the year ended March 31 last states that the operations of tho company have not been so profitable as in some former years. After making full provision for all bad and doubtful debts, and for depreciation of plant, machinery, buildings, and stocks, the net profit:; amount to £6470 9s. 4d. Of this an interim dividend for tho half-year ended September 30, 1510, absorbed £3317 2s. 6d.. making a. total of £3153 6s. 10d.; to which must lie added balance brought forward from last year £019 18s. lOd. This leaves available £3973 ss. Od. The directors recommend that this be applied as follows:—To payment of dividend at the rate of 2J per cent, for half-year just ended, making with interim dividend, i per cent, for the yc.Tr, £2369 7s. 6d„ and to carry forward £1603 18s. 2d. This course is recommended for the following reasons:—During tho year a phenomenal drought occurred in the South Island, and the shortage of water at Matanra necessitated curtailment or output for some mouths. Then it was thought advisable recently to reduce the prices of some of the main lines in order to deal with strong opposition which was being met with from imported articles. These factors accounted for the smaller profits shown. On April 12 a serious lire occurred at YVoodhaugh. and the plant and main buildings were much damaged. This, of course, has caused some loss, which will be emphasised by the interruption of business. As a matter of prudence, therefore, the directors reevmmeud a smaller distribution.
