MASTERTON NOTES.
(From Our Special. Correspondent.) Mastcrtan, May 19. ■ A young Native named AVi .Brown was .fined 40s. and costs in the Magistrate's Court at Masterton this morning for having used bad language in a public place. It will bo fifty-seven years ago on May 21 since tho 7 first party of four families arrived in Masterton. Of these, ■Mr.. David Dixon and. Mrs. W. Adams are the only survivors. Heavy rnin has fallen in this district during the last few days. The local observer has recorded about an inch. At the time of writing there are indications of tho weather breaking, although it is bitterly cold. Tho Uev.'j. T. Phillips, of Tenui, has tendered bis resignation to tho Diocesan Synod, and leaves for England with his son in October. Tho ciip competitions in. connection with the Wairarapa Hockey Association were continued yesterday, in bad weather. In tho senior division, Masterton was defeated by Carterton by two goals to nil. Tho match between St. Matthew's and P. antl.T. ended in a draw, neither side scoring. In tho junior division, Excelsior defeated Carterton by 5 goals to nil. One match in connection'with the Ladies' Association was played; Bamblers defeating liuia"by 3 goals to nil. Mr. Stephen Price, of Masterton, met with, a painful accident this week. Ho was driving a traction engine from Paliiatun, to Masterton, when his hand became involved in tho fly-wheel, and was severely crushed. He was brought to Masterton by a passing motor-car, and injuries dressed. A claim for £25 damages was brought by H. H. Wimsett in tho Magistrate's Court at Masterton against George Days!i, carried. The plaintiff alleged that tho noises caused by defendant's horses, which wore running in a paddock adjoining plaintiff's residence, were such as to disturb plaintiff's rest and cause, injury to his health. His Worship held that tho evidence I did not discloso a sufficient nuisance to support a claim for damages, and entered a nonsuit.
