PALAIERSTON DAY BY DAY.

(From Our Special Corresi,oHdcnU Palmorstcn, May 19. A sale of work, organised by tho ladies of St. Andrew's Churcli, lias been held during tho last two days. The taliings amounted to £121, and a quantity of goods aro still on hand. Tho fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held last night, tho Mayor presiding. There was a comsiderublo amount of correspondence, among it'being a letter from tho Minister for Internal Affairs, to tho effect that he had received a request from tho township of l'almcrston South that the name of Palmerston North should be changed. It was resolved to object to any such proposal, and to suggest to the Minister that, as Palmerston North was a most important town, and any change of name would lead to great inconvenience, tho namo of the southern township should be altered. Au invitation from tho Rev. H. G. Roscher to attend a special service at All Saints' Church on Empire Sunday was accepted. It was decided, on tho recommendation of tho Reserves Committee, to oh_servo Arbor Day on May 31, and to plant ono of the streets with trees. The recommendation of tho Opera House Committee that the Opera ' House he "wired"and lit with electricity was adopted. Councillor F. J. Nathan's motion that au application be made, for a Coronation subsidy of £250, to go towards erecting a children's ward at the hospital, was carried. ■ Councillor Nathan said that he had over £300 promised towards this object, and that the Mayor of Feilding (Mr. Goodbehere) had promised to co-operate with him in the movement, and would bring it before tho council of that town. The same councillor's motion that tho resolution making a. fixed charge for the Opera House for rehearsals by local institutions, be rescinded, and that applications ,bo treated on their merits, was also carried, and the Orchestral Society was granted tho use of tho Opera House for rehearsal for £1. On the motion of the Mayor, Councillors Beale, Nathan, and the mover were appointed a committee to approach tho Palmerston G.-:a Company to ascertain on what terms the company would bo prepared to transfer its plant to the council. In response to a deputation from tho Palmerston Brass Band for a grant of £1(10, it was resolved, that the band be paid £25 each for four concerts during tho year, the band to. give the usual open-air concerts. Tho deputation informed tho council that tho assets of the hand amounted to £750, the only liability being an amount of £250 owing to the bank; but the:band needed new uniforms, and more instruments."

Tlic Old "Girls' Hockey .Club has arranged n match with Victoria Coll. -fro to be played at 'Wellington on June 3. 'lie Hincmoa Ladies' Club is also arranging a came to bo played in Wellington on the same day.
