NOTES AND COMMENTS. [By Gliscoe.] Our special correspondent at Hawera wired as follows last night:—The Egmont meeting, which opens at Hawera to-day, promises to be most successful. The weather last night was line and cold, auguring weil tor firm Going to-day. large crowds are in town, and neeuimr.cdaikin is at a premium. Very big fields will be tho order of the day. There are no Tower than 17 runners in the hurdle*, U in the Scurry, and 15 in the big handicap, and 11 in tho Purse, Telegraph, and W'aihi Handicaps.

The principal favourites in tho Mauaia Handicap are Clemora (C. Jenkins), Mulga Bill (C. Monk), and Con the Shaughraun (C. Kmmerson).

The old gelding Rookby will be ridden by \Y". i'oung in tho Hack Hurdles. In his work on the tracks yesterday lie moved along nicely, and seemed to be quite free from rh'Juma'.ie trouble. This, however, is a malady that ccuies on horses very quickly, though, in most cases, it leaves them just as quickly.

F. Tilley has three horses at the meeting, viz., Mr. E. J. Matthews's speedy pair I'iriwai and Mortite, and Mr. Wiri Tokcna's Gaby. The trio are expected to run. very prominently. The first-named will start in the Scurry, Mortite will run in tho Telegraph Handicap, and Gaby in the Waihi Handicap.

The Native is now quite well again, rind will bo run in the last race to-day. He will bo ridden by W. Young.

The Foston horse, Stevens, will also contest the last event, but. on tho second day, lie icill be a competitor in the Ladies' race, in which ho will havo tho services of the Levin amateur, Mr. L. M'JJonnld.

The Hastings horseman ''Ranji" Thompson, was to have made the trip to Hawera to ride Waterworks in tho hurdles, but the postponement of tho Hastings fixture upset his plans, and he found it necessary to send !•'. Flynn to take liU place.

Up till 8 o'clock last evening, tho only scratching received for the meeting was that of Melologuo, who'was net sent up to the meeting. .

Hon. B. ■ MitchelsoD and Mr. H. T. Gorrie have been appointed to represent the Auckland Metropolitan Club at tho New Zealand Racing Conference.

Tho Wairarapa Racing Club held a meeting of stewards en Monday', Mr. Q. Donald occupying the chair. Thero were also present: Messrs. A. M. Wilkinson, T. Tngley, T. Benton, W. .1. Xix, and A. J. Toogood (treasurer). The bank account was reported to be in dr. ,C2.i3 lis. lid., and payments amounting to ,E2Si 3s. Sd. were authorised. The statement of receipts and expenditure in conneelion with the recent meeting was read and approved. Correspondence was received from tho Fcatherston Town Board, asking if tho club would contribute half the cost of concrete kerbing in front of its section. This v;as agreed to. It was resolved that the training track bo closed, for Sunday work until further notico. The Course Committee will meet on Tuesday,. .May 23, to see what work it is necessary to do. It was resolved to send a notice of motion to the Racing Conference, urging that all trainers' and jockeys' licenses be granted by a licensing committee of tho conference.
