CENSUS RETURNS.

The census returns of (lie Dominion so far to hand give an aggregate of 800,000. A considerable number of papers have yet to come to the central office in Wellington, so that it is impossible to accurately gauge what the total population of the Dominion will be. The net increases in the respective islands in the. returns 50 far to haud are as follow:—North Island, 52.192; South Island, 43,373; but these figures are- in a sense misleading because of the reconstruction that has taken place in many cafes iu boroughs, and counties, and the fact that in such cases no comparative tables are available. It is likely tll.lt the correct totals will be obtaiuable'this week.
