SLY GROG-SELLER FIXED £100.

Horace Jeyes pleaded guilty to two charges of unlawfully selling liquor to police constables on May 7 last. StitinnSergeant Darby informed the magistrate- that, on (he evening of 3la.v "i last, two constables in plain clothes went to !)" Courtenay Place, and were there served with liquor by accused. The plnce had been subsequently searched on warrant, and forty full bottles and a jar of beer bad been discovered. Accused asked for leniency on the. ground that- ho was a first offender, and had previously been a hard worker, doing odd electrical jobs at Waihi, and following tho occupation of coal worker in Wellington. Tho magistrate, after remarking on the gravity of the offence, imposed a fine of £50 on each charge, tho alternative being one month's imprisonment. Tho liquor was confiscated, and his. Worship directed the police to make inquries as to where and when Jcycs had obtained his supplies.
