Tho Mayor of Miramar (Mr. J. Brodic) criticises the empty house statistics of the borough as shown in tho census return. Tho census return states that there were 'JO uninhabited houses. This was quite incorrect. Ho had had a careful tally of empty houses made, and had ascertained that there were 28 or 29 empty houses, and 17 (mostly week-end) whares without occupants'. These had all been included by the Sub-enumerators, and the result was somewhat mislcadiv.i; to the public. Of the 29 houses, a number of these were small "week-end" or summer houses, so that really tho number of empty houses in the borough was about 17. Many of these were of an inferior build, and were not likely to bo readily occupied. At a meeting held on Thursday evening, it was decided that the committee which arranged the farewell dinner to the Prime Minister and the Hon. Dr. J. G. Findlay should act as a reception committee, and make arrangements for a suitable reception to the Ministers on their return to New Zealand. Owing to the slight indisposition of Mr. Maughan Bariiett. there will be no organ recital at the Town Hall this evening. The following committees have been set up by the Onslow Borough Council:—Finance: Councillors Lynneberg, Bates, and Gardner. Sanitation: Councillors Aplin, Dingwall, and M'Arthnr. Lighting: Councillors Stafford, Bowden, and Darvall. Public Works: Tho council as a whole. , The Miramar Borough Council has considered the proposal that tho meetings of tho council bo hold within the borough. After a brief discussion, the proposal was defeated, several councillors maintaining that no real desire for a change had been expressed, and that it was very doubtful if ratepayers would attend the meetings if they were held within the borough. A window curtain and portion, of a wall wero accidentally burnt last evening in a seven-roomed house (No. 91) in Mein Street, occupied by Mr. William Johnson and owned by Mr. John Evans Tho contents were insured in tho Sun Office for £200. ■ •
