THE DOG PARADE. I The dog parade, held in the Basin I?c----serve on Saturday last, was a big success, when ono takes into consideration the fact that it was the first of its kind held in the Dominion. The promoters—the Wellington Fox Terrier Club and the Irish Terrier Club of New Zealand—are to be complimented on setting an- example, which is a iriovo in the right direction. There were in all some -16 dogs on show,, good, bad, and indifferent. However, It's n start, and, judging by the large attendance, has aroused a certain amount of public interest. In the fox terrier class two breeders in particular made good, showings, viz.: Messrs. Shanley and Oimino, Newcastle Warlike, the property of the former, being champion dog of the parade. Among the. Irish terriers, the. successful owners were: Messrs. Morrison, Jnnsen, and Hobday, th« first-named winning the open class with his dog Nickie. This fellow is a fino specimen at present, and bids fair to develop into ii splendid dog. The-judging was carried out to the satisfaction of everyone concerned by Mr. J. Philpott (fox terriers),' and Mr. Percy Smith (Irish terriers). The success of the affair was due largely to the energies of Mr. H. Shanley, the secretary of the Wellington I'ojc Terrier Club. The following is the judge's report on tho Irish terrier section' ot last Saturday's parade:- , i Tho Irish terriers at the parade were riot numerous and with the exception of tho puppy dog "Nickie" nothing out of the ordinary appeared. ; Tho first-class brought out was puppy bitches under six months. There wero five entries. Three of these were under four months old and at such an early age it was difficult to separato first and second. No. 35, Mr. Thompson's Lady Kilkenny, is a good red with hard coat and better feet than No. 3i, Mr. Maxwell's Whareroa Wild Girl, and although showing dark shading on the face had a more even mouth than tho latter. The third, No. 38, Mr. Hobday's Glen Ira Pipper, had bad eyes and feet, and softer in coat and too fine in bone. ■Maiden -Bitches (ouo entry).—Mr. C. 8. Hanson's Peggy Grogan, is lacking in terrier character with badly-shaped eaw and soft, coat and was awarded a second certificate. : Class 14 (open, bitches).—Two of the-' four entered were absent, and uf tho w> niaining braco No. 39, Mr. W. Janson's Whareroa Wild Night scored in feet, coat, and colour. She was not so good iu niuzzlo and a little thicker in slioukleitian No. 42, Mr. A. Hobday's Whareroa Nell. The lntter's feet arc nurt fir her size she should bo stronger in forearm. It' was difficult to separate them, the former being awarded iirst. 'In puppy, maiden, and novice (one entry) No. 43, Mr. A. Morrison's Nickie, , first. This puppy is full of character. He has a grand-muzzle with plenty of whisker and beard, an even mouth, long forefacc, a little large in eye, but of good colour and expression. His nara are well placed and his skull is narrower here thun at the eyes. His shoulders are clean and narrow and throughout ho carries plenty of bore with straight limbs. His feet are thicker and more cutlike than any. of the others and with good colour nnd coat he looked a very typical terrior on the day. He is young and may, with age, grow out of the running, but. in his present form ho stood alone among the terriers. He has a (powerful iftwvand is-.cleanly,-.out.'.back to ho (nroatand having a nice lean neck; his head displays its many qunhties. 1 hopo tho puppy does not outgrow tho ■standard, in which case he may bo heard of at the shows this season, Open classes (four docs).—No. 43 above first with No. .41, Mr. W. Janson's Lungan Looney, second. The. latter showed well and looks a terrier, although lacking in whisker and not strong iu feet. No. 45, Mrs. M. A. Coull's Mickie, was third. Hβ is not in'coat, and feet are not good. His car carriage is too ragged and is not a good shower. The award for special for best Irish or fox terrier brought out Mr. H. Shanley's smooth fox terrier dog Newcastle Warlike, Mr. Cimino's smooth bitch Lyndale Nell, with the Irish' terrier puppy Nickie. After a little, the fox terrier bitch was put aside, nnd being unable to iigreo with Mr. Philpott as to ■the merits of the fox terrier dost, it was decided to call in Mr. J. F. Mills to decide upon the Irish or the fox lor special mention. Tho special was awarded the fox terrier for best exhibit, either sex, either breed, upon the casting decision of Mr. Mills. . I trust that general satisfaction prevailed in the awards made, reminding exhibitors that the same are but one fancier's opinion, and there must be differences, ample evidence being in tho fact that Mr. Philpott and myself could not agree upon the only brace wo were required jointly to adjudicate upon. . It is useless to comment upon the success of the innovation generally, feeling sure that this parade is tho advent of a series of such among the respective breeds. To interest the public, there seems no better means, and the annunl championship show of all breeds should attract many who have become interested through the medium of a parade. Wishing your club the success it merits, —1 am, etc., P. H. SMITH. May G, 1911. NEW ZEALAND KENNEL CLUB. A meeting of the.executive of the New Zealand Kennel Club was held on Friday, May 5.
