« ■ . (By TeJcEraph.-Spccia! Correspondent.) V/anganui, May 12. Tho first sod in the construction of tho Gonville-Castlccliifc tramway sys'tem will bo turned on Thursday next. ' Tho enrolling under the new Defence Act has gone on steadily since March 1. There arc still 500 who have not registered themselves. Tho Gonville Town Hall was officially opened last evening in tho presence of a large gathering of suburban residents. The speakers . included : Mr. Bignoll (chairman of the GonviHe Town Board), Mr. Hogan, M.P., Mr. Mackay: (Mayor of Wanganui), and Mr. Jones (Mayor of Wanganui East), all of whom spoke, in optimistic terms regarding tho progress of tho borough and suburbs, and looked forward to their civic amalgamation before very long, making, as or.e speaker put it, " a borough stretching from Aramoho to the sea."
