At a meeting of the Tariki factory suppliers at which Mr. W. M. Singleton, assistant director of tho dairy division in tho State Department of Agriculture, was present to adviso tho farmers respecting tho payment of milk, tho chairman (Air. J. linowles), in moving a voto of thanks to Mr. Singleton, said he was suro that all present must recognise the reputation Sir. Singleton bore as an expert authority on all matters relating to cheese, was well deserved. He had enlightened them on many questions on which they 'had previously. been in the.dark. -Without his presence there that night tho meeting would have been a fiasco, and 110 good would '•'■haVo resulted. As it was, through [ Mr. Singleton, they had como to an agreement which should be to tho mutual advantage of all and greatly strengthen tho position of tho company.
Tho Kaiparoro Clieeso Company directors have decided to advanco 9d. per lb. for butter-fat for April milk supply (states an exchange). The amount of advanco totals £273. The factory commenced running every other day on Saturday. Tho supply is now 300 gallons.
At a meeting of tho Eketahun.i branch of the Farmers' Union, Mr. W. B. Mathoson is reported to havo advocated the erection of a produce shed on tho Alfredton Domain to commemorato the King's Coronation. Ho said that the Government would subsidise any sum publicly raised £ for £, and he considered a goodly sum could bo obtained for such an object. Other members concurred with the suggestion, though considering it outsido the province of the branch to make any definite move.
One settler in the Mangahu is taking fiffectivu steps to eradicate the Californian thistle by clipping tho thistle over his extensive property, and covering the top for somo distance, around with a heavy layer of salt. About 125 tons of salt if being used for this purposeExchange.
A cheese vat that gets rid of the whey qnickly saves timo every day it is used, and that means a big saving in one season. Now that the butter factory runs only on alternate cbiys (says a Mnngaliuo correspondent) fanners have a little more time on their hands, mid, us a consequence, ploughing and cultivation for spring crops are being pushed o;i. The. Mayor of Ilawern is calling a meeting of delegates, of local bodies to consider proposals for tho laying down of a tram-line between Hawera and Kaupokonui. The lino would bo run through rich country, lie said, and would bo fed by tho big dairy companies. The Kaupokonui dairy factory last season had had to pay in cartage charges something like £1823 19s. 3d., and this season it was expected that tho cost would run into £2000. Riverdale bad had to pay .C9OO for cartage, and it is estimated that tho Pihania, Joll's, and Hawera main road factories would have to pay in cartage charges between £800 and £800. When the proposals were first put before the local bodies tho cost of tho lino was estimated at £GO,OOO, but ho now was given to understand that the lino could bo built for £50,000, and tho revenue, from the factories mentioned would pay the interest charges upon the capital cost of making the line. The Midhirst dairy factory is now only running every other day on account of the diminished supply of milk (a Taranaki paper says). At tho last mectiug of tho Waitara Dairy Company's directors, the matter of the district being represented at the forthcoming winter show in Now Plymouth was brought forward, one of the directors stating it was the intention of Huirangi and tho district supplying tho factory to make a big exhibit to be called the "Waitara AVest district exhibit." Ho asked tho directors to consent to tho company's butter being included in tho list. Tho request was granted.—Waitara correspondent of the "Taranaki News."
The supply of milk to the Nirenha dairy. factory lias diminished of late, tho amount now having fallen to about 1000 gallons. It is anticipated that tho factbry will close down for tho winter months very early in June. After tho drought it looked as though feed would be very scarce in tho winter, but tho rain, combined with -jthe mild weather that has sot in since then, has allayed any fears on that score.
