WHY THEY HUNG OFF.
AMERICANS AND NEW ZEALAND
WOOL,
"There has been quito an absence of buying here, and in Australia, and it has had quito a depressing influence on tho local market," said Mr. H. D. Baker, United States Vice-Consul-Gen-erril, to a Dominion representative. "This has probably been due to expectations of a reduction in tho wool tariff. ■ The American representatives :havo been buying in. a kind of hand-to-mouth- way/ and awaiting developments, as they'would not want to bo , .loaded up with wool which had paid a heavy duty if they could avoid it.
"While the uncertainty exists," he continued, "they will probably hang off. In tho meantime they have bought in tho London market. The London market offers better chances of picking up what you want from day to day: \tho sales are better scattered through the year."
