UNSKILLED LABOUR.
ANNUAL MIGRATION TO THE CITY
Referring to unskilled labour in Wellington, tho Labour Journal, published yesterday, says:— " Applications for employment from unskilled labourers have increased over tho number dealt with last month. This increase was expected, as with tho approach of winter work slackens olt considerably in some of the largest factories, notably in those dealing frith wool and hides and tho slaughtering of meat. The dairying season js now closing, and farm operations arc slack. Private employment outside, of Wellington has been offered fairly freely, whilst work on the co-operativo railway-con-struction works was also available tor those men used to heavy manual labour. Tho majority of tho applicants arc single men, and were in most cases straVers to Wellington. This annual migration to the city invariably creates a difficulty for the Department, and, as there is already sufficient local labour available, men living in the country will bo well advised to stay where they are. Tho demand for miners and bushmon still continues, but-good men used- to this class of work are hard to get. During the'period just ended, 162. men (53 married and 109 single), with 17G dependents, were sent to employment— 43 being sent to Government works and 119 to private employment. rliroe wives were also assisted to join their husbands on Government works.
