THE MAWSON EXPEDITION.

Shncklcton has received promises in response (o his appeal' of valuable supplies for Dr. Mawson's Antarctic expedition equipment. A West Australian contributes ,£IOOO, and Madame Melba .£IOO, making Dr. Mawson's fund ,£9OOO.

Lieutenant Hugh Watkins, of the Essex Regiment, will, be the pilot of Dr. Mawson's monoplane, which is being manufactured; by Vickers, Sous, and Maxim. The ;rijophinc mil have a screen to protect and passengers from the cold.

The monoplane will be employed in mopping and surveying. It will take at the southernmost depot sufficient petrol for a single flight to the Polo and return to the depot—namely, 250 miles.
