The "Standard" states that after the reporters left Monday's Royal' Colonies Institute meeting at which Sir George Rcid read a paper, Sir .Tohn Downer, the South Australian Parliamentarian, wa.s invited by the chairman, Lord Carrinßton, President of the Board of Agriculture, to speak. Ho rfi'errcd to the Australian Referendum, when Lord Carrin?ton sharply sard:—"Wo, wnnot have politics hero under any circumstances. TUh is <i non-political meeting. 'There will be no politics talked while I am-m the chair."

An impressive silence that followed indicated that the sympathy of thi} meeting was with Sir John Downer, who apologised for unintentionally offending. Tic said: "I am sorry to hare done so, and still more sorry that you called on ine to speak."
