A well-attended meeting was held in the Club Hotel on Tuesday evening:, when arrangements were made in connection with the public, meeting on Saturday, when Mr. Richard Hazniton. M;P., will deliver an address on Home Biile for Ireland. Mr. P. O'Connor was appointed secretary, and it was decided lo ask Mr. AV. H. Field, M.P., to preside. Invitations were also font to the Mayors of Fnlnierston North, Levin, and Foxt'on, and others. Over SO member; attended the weekly meeting of the Literary and Debating Society on Tuesday night in the Druids' Hall. The president, the Rev. J. R. M'Zenzie, was in the chair. The subject of debate was: "That the Second Chamber should be elected by popular ballot." Mr. Schmidt took the affirmative, and was opposed by Mr. J. Murray. Messrs. Gardiner, A. 'Mitchell, T. K. M'Millan, E. J. Judd, \V. Clayton, W. Galland, Hcnsman, and others took part, in the discussion, which resulted in the affirmative being favoured by a large majority. From present indications the society is likely to have at least as sucressnil a season as last, when all records were broken. GREYTOWN. Mr. W. C. Buchanan, M.P., gave an address hero on Tuesday evening dealing with the business done last session, and other matters. The speech was on similar lines to those of Mr. Buchanan's Cartevton address. Severn 1 questions wore asked, and satisfactorily answered, and a vote of thanks was passed at the' close of the meeting. During the course of his speech, Mr. Buchanan spoke very strongly on railway management, and the Rimutakii deviation, and his remarks on this subject were warmly received by the audi4n.ee. ■ The last fortnight has been marked by splendid weather for farmers, and they have been able, to get ahead with ploughing. The cold nights have somewhat stopped the growth of grass, and will cause a shortage of milk at the- factories and an early closing 'down. CARTERTON. Messrs. Wakelin Brothers have donated 10s. towards the funds of the Carterton Brass liatftl, and Mr. X. .Shepherd a score of music. A golf club has been formed in Carterton, with links at Carrington. It has a strong membership. A movemcut is on foot to form a branch of the Wairarapa Egg Circle in Greytown. The subject for the next debate of the Carterton Literary and Debating Society is: "That the Labour laws have been of benefit to the people of Xew Zealand." The debate will-take place on Mondavi next. " I
