PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.

(From Our Special Correspondent.) Palmcrston, May 10. A meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board was "held at Palmcrston yesterday afternoon. Present: Messrs, 11.I 1 . J. Hennessv (chairman), J. A. Nash, Gibbs, Hayfortii, B. Gardner, said Wood. The chairman intimated that lie would bring up a report as to the finance and general position of the board at a meeting to be held in Palmcrston in about three weeks. The granting of the legse of Section 4S to T. Ci. Stockwell was confirmed, and the tender of P. C. Daniel for Section 47 was confirmed. It was decided to seek advice from the board's solicitor as to whether a special .rate, levied as security for a loan, would have to be collected, or whether it could be paid out of ordinary revenue. . Messrs. ivoss and Fitchett were granted permission to erect a punt shed. It was decided that the charge for lighting on the river bo XI per vessel; two or more vessels 011 the same tide a minimum of 10s. per vessel, lights only 011 South Head and Rush Flat, 10s. per vessel. The salary of the secretary, Mr. \V. Bock, was increased to .£32 per annum, the secretary al: the same time being complimented on the manner in which he had carried out his duties. The chairman and Mr. Gibbs were appointed a Finance Committee, with power to pass all ordinary accounts. The ordinary meeting of the Terrace End .School Committee was held last night, 11 r. J. A, Nash being in the chair. The headmaster (Jlr. F. Fairbrcther) reported (hat there were 42f> names on the roll, with an average attendance of 3W, tho low average being accounted for by Ihe prevalence of measles. The superintendent of the Fire Board (Mr. Warner) had reported adversely .011 some of the exits from the schoolrooms. On the motion of the chairman, it was decided to call a meeting of two delegates from each of the Town School Committees to wait 011 the Borough Council, and ask that a picture show bo given one night a year, the proceeds to bo devc-ted to the funds of the School Committees. The headmaster was requested to take up a collection among the children in aid of tho "Fresh Air .Fund." tho committee to subsidise the sum collected. The Supreme Court will hold its next fitting in Palmcrston on May 26. On the criminal calendar there are throe cases of theft, and ono of breaking and entering. At its next meeting the Fox ton Harbour Board will consider the advisability of purchasing a dredge, or hiring one. The channel at the present time is reported to bo excellent. Messrs. lJea'kes and Cuddie, of the Veterinary and Dairy Departments, are at present on a visit to tho Glen Oroua i|iiry_ faclory, in connection with the experiments which have been carried on there for some time in feeding pasteurised and unpasteurized milk to pigs. The results, so far, show that while the pigs fed 011 tho treated milk are practically freo from disease, quite forty-five per cent, of those fed 011 unpasteurised milk aro afrccted with disease.

The annual meeting of the Palmerston Literary and Debating Society was held on Monday, tho Mayor presiding. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follow:—Patron, Mr. J. A. Nash; president, Mr. 21. Cohen; vice-presidents, Messrs. E. S. Abraham, and A. E. Clausen; lion. sec, Mr. A. W. Downer; treasurer, Mr. C. Brown; auditor, Mr. 11. N. Cooke; committee, Messrs-. Aitchison, Cooke, Dustiu, and Osborne. It was resolved to open the season on May- 17 with impromptu speeches, aud musical items. A prize of XI Is. was donated to be awarded to the junior member who makes most progress during the season.
