A Golden Wedding. An interesting function took place at Avondale yesterday when Mr. John Bollard, M.P., and Mrs. Bollard celebrated their golden wedding by a gathering of their children and grandchildren, and a number of personal friends (telegraphs our Auckland correspondent). Mr. and Mrs. Bollard are amongst file oldest settlers of Avondale. Both come out to New Zealand from Ireland in their young days, -before they were acquainted. They met in Auckland and 50 years ago to-day were married at St. John's College. Thoy at oneo made their home at Avondale, and have lived in the same house ever since. Fourteen children have been born to them and ten of these are now living." Mr. and Mrs. Bollard, who are each 71 years of age. aro both enjoying_ good health. Mr. Bollard, who served in the Auckland militia during the Maori War, has also taken an active part in public life during his half century's residence at Avondale, and ho enjoys the murine distinction of having just completed 50 years' continuous service on one body— the Avondale School Committee. He has Also been chairman of tho committee for the greater portion of the 50 years. Mr. Bollard has" represented the Eden electorate in the House of Representatives for the past fifteen years. An Afternoon Tea. A very delightful tea was given by Mrs. P. S. Pope at her- homo in Kclburnc yesterday afternoon, for her daughter, Miss Dora Pope, about thirty of the latter's college friends being present. A number of amusing competitions were lic-ld, the winners being Miss Vera Thomas, Miss Jean M'Kenzie, Miss E. Macallister; and Miss Catherine Muir. Music was also contributed-by Miss Dorothy Gibb, Miss Given- Nicklin, Miss Violet Macdonald, and Miss Nancy Thalmers. Tea was served in the dining-room, the table being effectively arranged with scarlet berries and autumn leaves. The beautiful chrysanthemums, which .were ..to be seen in tho drawing -room, had come from R-otorna, and were specially admired. Mrs. Pope received her guests in a cream chiffon taffetas gown, and Miss Dora Pope was in a pretty white muslin frock. Feilding Notes. Mrs. D. H. Guthrie has returned from Plimmerton, whero sho and her small son have been visiting for some v.ceks. Mrs. Quillianv (New Plymouth) is the .guqst, of Mrs. Horrocks.; _ ..., ; Miss Carew is staying with Mrs. Bruce (Denbigh, Street). Mrs. D. Stewart and family have come to live in toivn, and - have taken Mr. Walpole's house while the latter is on a visit to England. Skating ha* again hecome very popular, there being a large attendance on the opening night last Wednesday. "Amongthose present : were Mesdames Johnson, Glasgow, Bailey, Knyvett, Harding, Roberts, Misses Kirton, Haybittle, Bailey, O'Halloran, Shannon, Bruce, Prior, and others. Mrs. George Luxmore is visiting Mrs. Luxmore (West Mount). Mr. and Mrs. Pickering (Waituna) have gone north for a lengthy holiday. There was a very largo attendance at the golf links on Saturday. Mrs. Tingey and Miss Bailey gave afternoon tea, and nearly all the 'players played off status games. Among those playing were Mesdames Montgomery, Harding, Grut, Misses Shannon ; Wyatt, Bai'.ey, Mountfort, Burroll, Prior, Kirton, O'Halloran, Moore, Bruce, and Slisses Shannon, Power, Prvde, Prior, Caiman, Parkes, Ongley, Trevena, Long, Campbell, Goodbchere, and M'Lean. Mr. and Mrs. Campbell, of the local • branch nf the Bank of New Zealand, and Mr. L. Smith have been moved to Rongotca, where tho bank has cpened a new branch. The many friends of Mrs. R. Young will be pleased to hear that she is making a good recovery fiom her illness.. Obituary. News was received in Masterton yesterday of the death of Mrs. Smith, wife of Mr. John Smith, one of the pioneers of Mastertnn. The late Mrs. Smith was very well known and highly esteemed by a 'largo circle of friends.

Miss Lilian Turton has arrived in Wellington from tho north, and is to be one of the maids 'of honour at the marriage of Miss Elgar to Captain Hamilton next week. Miss Turton is the guest of Sirs. Elgar. Mrs. George Pearce left yesterday on a visit to liotorua. Mr." and Mrs. G. Hume aro in town, and aro'Staying at tho Hoyal Oak. The death is announced of Mrs. F. G. Newcombe, an old and highly respected resident of Wanganui, who passed away this week after a long and painful illness. Mrs. J. T. King, accompanied by her niece (Nurse Norman), and her husband, loaves by the Warrimoo on Friday for England, via Sydney. Plunket Nurse Morgan, from Duuedin, has begun duty at New Plymouth. Mr. and Mrs. .T. E. Bickford left Dannevirke on Monday for Auckland where they embark on a tour of tho world. St. Peter's Club are holding their annual danco on Juno 28 in St. Peter's Schoolroom, Ghuznee Street. Dr. and Mrs. Alexander Wilson are visiting Wellington. Mrs. Eolleston.
