THE DEATH OF MRS. MAGINNITY.
FINDING AT THE INQUEST. At tho Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., the inquest, concerning the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Magiunity, was concluded. The evidence of Miss .M agiunity and Mrs. Chibbum had been taken at Karon on tho previous day, and medical testimony was now given. Dr. Herbert stated that ho had ben called on Sunday morning about halfpast eleven o'clock. He travelled by motor, and arrived at tho hau>e about 10 minutes after receiving ihe telephone message, lie saw the body and thought life "had been extinct for about half an hour. On examination there was nothing to show the causa of death, but witness was then shown a battle labrlled "Nikolecn," and Miss Maginnily informed him that her mother had taken a doso nf (his in mistake for cough mixture. Witness did not l;uuw tho mixture, but, from inquiries, he learned that it was concentrated essence of tobacco. That being si its principal ingredient would be nicotine—one of the most powerful and raji-idlv-aeting poisons known, and almost as ileadlv in effect as prussie acid or strychnine." Oniv a small quantity would be required to cau«o. death. From what witness had been told ho came, to (he conelusion that death was duo (o poisoning from the subslance described on Ihe label as "Xikotoen." The remedies tried by Miss Magimiity and Mrs. Olabburn could not have been improved on, but, in dealing with such a poison, witness did not think that anything could have saved deceased. ■ A verdict was returned that deceased died at Karori on May 7. from nicotine poisoning accidentally taken. The funeral of the late Mrs. Maginnily took place at the Karori Cemetery yesterday morning, a large number ot mourners following the cortege to the graveside, A brief service was held by tho Rev. Father Peoples at the residence of the deceased lady and then the funeral made its way to the cemetery, Father Peoples also conducting the service at the grave. Among the immediate relatives present were Mr. A. Maginnily from Nelson, Miss Ida Madimity. and Mr. and Mrs. Quirk.
