WORKERS' DWELLINGS.
a — SOME INTERESTING POINTS. 'There appears to be some misunderstanding amongst workers, especially thoso in tho South Island cities, in regard to the conditions upon which land for workers' cottages is to be obtained. Tho belief seems to be general that they can select the land themselves for the buildings. This is not a condition. It is the duty of the authorities to purchase land wherever it is most suitable according to circumstances, endeavouring always, of course, to obtain it in the locality desired by the applicant, or .-is near as possiblo to tho scene of his labours. This is what the Government are considering in Wellington now in regard to certain blocks under offer. Another provision in the Act that seems to have caused misapprehension is that relating to life insurance on the part of those who have taken up houses. Tne provision is purely optional. The workers may enter into a policy for the amount owing upon the dwelling, with a method of adjustment as tho money is being paid off, but there is no compulsion. In tho event of death the difference between tho loan and the insurance amount would be paid to the estate.
