The Literary and Debating Society hold its first meeting of the s-iasan on Friday night, Mr. AV Barton gave an address 011 "Ideals." Headings were contributed by Messrs. 31. Miller, A. J. Toogood, D. Macdona.'d, and J. AV. Card. 'J'he subject for debate at next meeting, on May 10, will be, "Should Women Hold Equal Positions in Tublic Life With Menr" Mr. W. G. Miller will take the afiirmativo, and ill'. D. Macdonald the negative. Messrs. Donovan and Redmond, two of the Irish Home Rule envoys, spent a few hours in Fealherston on Friday. They were the guests of Mrs. Jno. Card, senr. OTAKI. The,monthly sitting of the Magistrate's Court 'took place on Friday, Mr. A. D. Thomson, S.M., presiding. .Tee Chew was fined ,i!l for smoking opium, with costs 75., and .£2 for having some in his possession, with costs 75., while Henry Knox pleaded guilty to a breach of a prohibition .rder, and was fined 10s. and costs 7s. Reginald Murray was fined 55., and costs 75., for cycling at night without lights, while Ste.vart and Connor were fined 2s. and 7s. costs each for failing to send their children to school the requisite number of times. On judgment summonses, AV. Roach was ordered to pay .£l2, and Fred Nicholson .£l3 16s. by monthly instalments of J2l. The AVaikanao creamery is sending to Wellington daily 180 to SCO gallons of milk, while the Beikorangi creamery contemplates closing in the course of a few weeks. The Druids' social on Wednesday nig'if, and the AVaikanae Athletic Club's second annual ball, were great successes, large attendances being at each. J. A?. Read, tho well-known billiard player, gave ail exhibition of the game on Thursday night, defeating AA'aka Naiha. His biggest break was 89. A Native child died at Fukckaraka on Thursday, and in consequence a tangi is being held. ■ CARTERTON. At the annual meeting of the AA 7 airarapa Terminating Building Society on Thursday evening, Messrs. \Y. Benton, AV. J. Lindop, and J. AV. Kershaw were reelected directors. An appropriation of .£3OO by ballot fell to Mr. !•'. 11. Tyler, of Carterton. The local branch of the AVairarapa Egg Circle obtained 2s. Id. a dozen for last week's shipment of eggs. The Woodville County Council met on Thursday last, Councillor Hughes being in the chair. The clerk reported that there wore only a few rates of any importance outstanding. It was resolved to hold over proceedings for one month, and, in tho meanwhile, the clerk is to write regarding ono case, in which the rates •amounted to over <£CO. The Minister for Public Works acknowledged tho council's application that Government should bear ■the total cost of maintaining the Lower Gorge Bridge ajid Gorge Road, and promised that tho matter should have consideration. The Department forwarded plans, specifications, and quantities for the Lower AVoodlands Road bridge, and tenders are to bo called. The chairman reported that he had a quantity of pipes which had been declined for borough drainage works, but which were quite good enough for culverts, and had thereby, effected a considerable saving. Action approved. Slaughterhouse licenses were granted to AVoodville Bacon Company, Grieves and Thomas, and C. A. Funkc. It was resolved to put 209 yards of metal on M'Lean Street North, at the locality .leading past the racecourse, and to build a new bridge near Mr. Kemp's on the Otawaho Road, Kumeroa. The latter work is to be done by day labour, and will cost .£'2o. The chairman pointed out that there were other bridges which would require renewing? shortly, and a tight hand would have to be' kept on the finances. A long discussion took place on ■an application by the ranger to bo paid by salary instead of by fees, and it was almost resolved to "abolish impounding altogether, but the matter was finally held over. The first of the season's meetings of the Methodist Mutual Improvement Society was held 011 AVednesday evening, at which there ivas a largo attendance. The Rev. Mr. Beckett occupied the chair. At the inquest concerning the death of — Iveegan, who died suddenly on Tuesday, a verdict of death from heart failure was returned, the evidence of Dr. Mules being to that effect.
