RUGBY FOOTBALL.

WHERE TO GO TO-DAY.

The meeting between Oriental and Poneke at the Park this afternoon should attract a largo crowd, and patrons should not bo disappointed in tho game. Great things are expected. Both teams have been showing good form this season, and, with the largo number of representative players engaged, the. contest is likely to be followed with more than usual interest. Mitchinson. tho provincial and intercolonal representative three-quarter, will be making his first appearance for his club this afternoon, while such exponents of the game as Fred. Roberts, Walslu , , Tilyard, Perry, Elliott, Kinvig, Calc.Y.ai, Matheson, and M'JLeod will be scon in action. There wiTI1)0 tho usual early games to. interest those who prefer getting there early to avoid , tho crowd.

Sotheran, a South Island representative player of last season, arrived in Wellington from Greyinouth yesterday, and, it is understood, will throw in his lot with tho Poneke Club.

LACROSSE.

This afternoon tho lacrosse matches for the Proud Cup will commence, Kelburue and Capitol trying conclusionsat the Basin Reserve, and Columbiaplaying Wellington at Duppa Street,, both matches starting at 3 p.m. The teams are as follow:—

Capitol (Green)—Culverdale, Moran, King, Montgomery, J. Rankin, Boyd, It. liaukin, Snow, Forbes, Lewis, Bitossi, and Hugo.

Kelburue (Blue) —Mayer, Jordan, Canty, Hutton, Gandar, Eeg, Thompson, Jones, M'Namara, Seddon, Bragg, and Proud.

Columbia (Black) —Thomas, O'Leary, Verschaffclt, Caigou, Hedge, Quinn, Leydon, Casey, Fama, Grant, and Burns.

All junior players will attend at Duppa Street ground, where a practice match will be played under the coaching of an experienced player. Intending players are invited.

SCULLING

TRYING TO BRING WEBB OUT. ANOTHER ATTEMPT. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Wanganui, May 5. Though after his defeat by Pearco Wm. Webb announced that ho had retired from sculling, it is now- stated that his friends here are trying to persuade him to come out and have another try for tho world's championship. Webb himself has said nothing as yet regarding tho matter.

CYCLING.

'A TARANAKI ROAD RACE. (By Tcleeraph.—Press Association.) Now Plymouth, May 5. At a meeting to-night it was decided 'to organise a Taranaki Britannia Cycle road race, round Mount Eginont, offering prize- money amounting to £300. The race is to take place on August 17.

In the doubles, Fisher and Parker defeated Poidoviu and Barbour, 6—3, 6-1, 9-7.

BILLIARDS.

The Now Zealand billiard champion, J. W. Read, who has returned to Wellington from tho north, conceded Mr. T. Julian 150 in a gamo of 600 up at Inglewood, and won rathe/ easily by 249. Tho winner's best breaks, although not large, wero consistent, being 59, 89, 73, 71, 56, and 50. At Otalci the champion gave a local expoueiit 450 in a gamo of 750 up, and won by 102. Two of his breaks (all off tho red) wero 166 and 117.
