THE NEW COUNCILS.
GETTING UNDER WAY. Tlie first meeting of the newly-elected Wellington City Council will be held at nnnn to-dav. The principal business will be the installation of Mr. T. M Wilfor.l a* Mayor (or a further term. Tho corenionv incidental to tho occasion is simple Tho "Mayor-fleet, in presence of tho council, makes and signs the following declaration-.— "I hereby declare that I will fciithfullv and "imnartially, nud according to t'ho best of my skill and judgment, execute the powers and authorises vested in me," as Mayor of the City of Wellington, by virtue c£ the Municipal Corporations Act, 100 S." The signature of tho new Mayor to this brief declaration is to bo witnessed bv cue councillor, and by the Town Clerk. Ordinarily tho retiring Mayor, having presided over the opening stages of the installation ceremony, vacates the chair and conducts the Mayor-elect to hip sent. This part of the proceedings will perforce have to be omitted in Wellington on tho present occasion, as the retiring Mayor and the Mayor-elect are one and the sanio person. Councillors, before assuming office, have It sign a declaration in the same '.onus as that to which tho Mayor ■subscribes. This duty has already ):een fulfilled by the fifteen' newly-elected members of dm Wellington City Council. In their case, it is not required that tho signing s-hoiild be done- in presence of tho assembled council. Apart from the installation of the Mayor, the- City Council to-day will elect standing committees for the ensuing term and transact formal business. The various suburban boroughs will also hold inaugural meetines to-day. The declaration to be signed by Mayor and councillors is the same as" in the ca<e of the City CouuciL
