PROHIBITION LEAGUE.

THAT CHALLENGE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Chrlstchurch, April 28. At a meeting of the Christclmrch Prohibition Leaguo held to-night Mr. S. M'Combs referred to the challenge reiterated by Mr. AVm. Thomson, in a. recent telegram from Greymouth. Mr. M'Combs said that Mr. Thomson's challenge was made in October, 190S, and the samo month the Christchurch Prohibition Leaguo accepted the challenge, wliicli was that Mr. Thomson would give £1000 if his figures were | proved incorrect. Mr. Thomson had i not yet replied to tho League's acceptance of his challenge or to the countcrchallengo made by the Leaguo in November, 1908. Tho following cable message was sent by the Leaguo to tho Governor of Portland, Maine:—"Liquor party hero allege more drunkenness and crimo in your Stato than in licensed States in proportion to population. Is this true?" The following reply was received:— "Allegations of Liquor party, in my judgment, absolutely false.—William T. Cobb, Governor State of Maiilo."
