NO-LICENSE LEAGUE.
ANNUAL MEETING POSTPONED. ■ "We are in this awkward position. Our president is absent from town, our secretary is also away, and, although he has prepared an annual report, I ■understand that it cannot be found in his house. The treasurer is here with his report, and it is a very wet night, and other folk arc not here. "Under (lie circumstances 1 have been wondering whether wo should proceed with the meeting." Such were the opening remarks addressed by the Rev. J. Dawson to a gathering of sixteen persons, who assembled in the Vivian Street Baptist Schoolroom last evening to attend the annual meeting of the Wellington City and Suburbs No-Licen?e League. A short discussion ensued as to whether or not the meeting should be proceeded with, or whether it should be adjourned until the secretary's report was available. A proposal that the election of officers should be proceeded with was lost. In view of the absence of the president, and the secretary and his report, it was decided to adjourn the meeting. It was resolved that the- gathering should discuss matters in general. The acting-secretary announced that Miss Waymouth, well known in temperance societies in tho South Island, was to visit Wellington, for tome months, and would render assistance to local workers during her stay. It was decided to hold a, convention of the representatives o? the five electorates on July 5, when a plan of campaign for the forthcoming elections will be drafted. As the success of certain towns in New Zealand under No-Licans? has been questioned of laic, diagrams have been prepared having special reference to Masterton and Waihi. These were produced, and illustrated by Mr. W. J. Helyer, who supplemented the diagrams with interesting remarks, giving details nf crime statistics in the district.-; named. During tho evening reference was made In Mr. T. E. Taylor's success at, the municipal elections at Christrhiirch, and it■ was decided to send Mr. Taylor tho league's hearty congratulations on his election to the Mayoralty of Christchurch.
"Do you consider it a moral M-rong to cheat a lawyer?" asked the person who is always looking for a chance to start something. "No," replied tho man whoso specialty is worldly wisdom, "but, I consider it a physical impossibility." "Why don't you try to write your name on the' scroll of fame:-" "My friend." said the severely, practical person very earnestly, "I have never yet seen anybody tearing leaflets out of the seioll of'fame and gel ting them cashed at the bank."
