THE LATE ELECTIONS.
CITY COUNCIL, CHECKING THE RETURNS. '•"■••• A'RECOED POLL. The. city returning officer (Mr. Jas. Ames), and his staff were busy all day yesterday checking tho returns which were published yesterday morning. . A-number of minor. errors- were discovered, but at the moment it is. extremely unlikely that the published results of. the polling will be affected in any material degree. The total number of electors who recorded their votes is not yet available, but. the •returning officer, estimates that nearly 17,000 electors participated in the poll. This is tho largest number of persons that have voted at any municipal election of recent years, in this city, and is undoubtedly a record for Wellington. It exceeds the'poll of two years ago (the last municipal elections) by about 3600, and is almost double that of 1807. There are 29,000 names on the roll. One of those interested in the Labour campaign has calculated the increases of the votes polled for the. labour candidates, and states that in the 190" municipal election Labour polled 20,181 votes (average per candidate 2523); in 1909 the'number rose to- 26,-0-fO (average per candidate 3255). The curious position which. arose at New Brighton last night in completion with' the municipal polling (when the booth was rushed b'v a big crowd' just before closing time, and the returning officer adjourned the proceedings) has been tho subject of much comment this morning. Polling there is being continued today. At. several city booths, particularly in Sydenham, where polling was very hiavv in the evening, large numbers of voters were in danger of being crowded out/ However, they were admitted to the booth before the doors were locked, and their votes were recorded lato. The voters appreciated the position, and gave the officials every assistance, so that the work could proceed smoothly. In one booth 120 persons recorded their votes after 7 o'clock, tho last paper being handed in shortly before 8 o'clock.
