Tho death occurred on Tuesday, at I'nlincrslou, of Mrs. Rickard, mother of. .Mrs. How, of this town. The election lor Harbour Board members, as far as Otaki was concerned, passed off very quietly. Only three candidates were nominated for the position of wardens for the Road Board yesterday, viz., Messrs. W. Best, D. Nces, and 0. J. G. D'Ath. They were declared duly elected. So far scarcely any local youths have applied for enrolment under the Defence Act. Evidently they are not acquainted with tho provisions thereof. Tho Roman Catholic concert, held bn Wednesday evening, in aid of funds (or the erection of a church at To Horo, was a great suceo;-?, some of tho items being especially pleasing. The Misses Jones (Wellington) were among the performers. Heavy rain, accompanied by thunder and occasional Hashes of lightning, prevailed here yesterday, the downpour deluging the streets. The lightning interfered with the telephone service, and some subscribers were unable to use their ma* chines. LEVIN. A gymkhana, in aid of the funds of St Mary's Anglican Church, was held on Wednesday, on the recreation grounds, It proved a gratifying success. A. new cycle rink was opened yestarday. It is situated in Oxford Street, and is 70 feet long and 40 feet wide. A dairy building for the Government Experiment Farm at Wereroa, is to bo erected forthwith. Mr. J. M'Lcavey lias been re.elected chairman of tho local branch of the Farmers' Union. A storm, accompanied by thunder, pa™ ed over the district yesterdhy. The receni rains linvc been most welcome. WOODVILLE. Great interest was manifested in the Mayoral and council elections on Wednesday. The polling booths resembled those on the general election day, there being a constant stream of voters, and the poll was a largo ono for Woodville. Somewhere about GOO persons recorded their votes, and the results of the poll were as the general opinion predicted that they would be.
