Jlr. Carroll could not state whether, in the event ol a commissioner being dispatched, he would be a Supreme Court ,lml?e or a Dc1/arfmontal officer. The matter was under consideration. At a meeting of the Wellington Committee of the St. John Ambulance Association yesterday afternoon, it was deemed to hold the annual meeting of the association on June 26 next, this date ntting in with the engagements of his JvxceUcnc.y the Governor, who has signified his intention of being present. A sub-committee was appointed to draft the annual report. The Groymouth correspondent of tho Lyttelton Times" states that the timber trade of the West Coast is again assuming normal conditions, and a maintenance of the present output for several months at least is confidently anticipated. At tho Trades Hall last night Mr. Withy delivered an address on "Taxation of Land Values." There was a. fair audience, and at the conclusion of the address the speaker was accorded a vote of thanks. By virtue of a notice in the Gazette last evening the following are the hours at which butchers' shops shall in future close in Wellington:—Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, at 5 p.m.; Wednesdays, 1 p.m.; Saturdays, 7 p.m. Some good work was again accomplished by the Maitai's wireless operator (Mr. Gabriel) on the round voyage from Wellington to San Francfcco and back. On Rearing the American coast ho dispatched a number of private messages. Although he got into touch with Honolulu, full communication was not established. At a distance of 1100 miles communication was maintained with H.JI.S. Powerful at Sydney. H.M S. Encounter was also spoken at Auckland. Whilst she was on the voyage from Sydney to Suva the steamer Levuka, of. the" A.U.S.N. Line, was communicated with at a distance of 1200 miles, and, when the Jlaitai was between MOO and 1500 miles out from the Pacific Coast, messages were dispatched to Los Angeles. Last month 257-J persons arrived in the Dominion (as against 2556 for last year). The number of departures was 4481* (last year 3593).
