GUARD'S PRESENCE OF MIND. (By TcloEraph.—Special Correspondent.) Masterton, April 2G. Comparatively little interest was manifested in the Harbour Board election to-day, and the municipal elections did not produce a great deal of excitement. Settlers from the country expressed themselves very strongly at the attitude of Parliament in differentiating in the voting for Harbour Board candidates in favour of the dwellers in town. A pig turning the scales at 3G9lb. was slaughtered at the Jlasterton abattoirs on Friday. It was gro\ni by Mr. B. R. Rayner, of Taratahi. A smoke concert in connection with St. Matthew's Club was held last evening, and proved a successful function. An elderly nan had a narrow cicapc from being crushed to death at the Solway siding at mid-day to-day. The train from Wellington was pulling up, when he alighted (in a way common to travellers) in the opposite direction to that in which the train was travelling. The guard, who was on tho platform, caught hold of him, but not befora his foot had got under the wheels. The trqin was pulled up quickly, or a tragedy" would have been recorded. As it was, the man escaped with an injury to his foot. Mr. H. Toogood leaves Jlasterton today on a. visit to the Old Country. The friends of Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Groves, of Castlepoint, will regret to hear of the death of their sixteen-year-old daughter, Ellen Lucy, which took place yesterday. Tho weather continues showery in this district. Ploughing operations havo been commenced in several parts. At the meeting of the Masterton Borough Council last evening, the Mayor gave a brief review of the finances of the borough, and stated that the position, generally speaking, was very satisfactory. A Wairarapa settler, who was breeding English mallard ducks for liberation on his estate, has lost the whole of his ducklings by the depredations of hawks. A meeting of the Jlasterton Hospital Committee was held yesterday, when routine business was transacted. It was reported that there were twenty-four patients in the institution. Two patients have been admitted from Taratahi, suffering from diphtheria. Miss Briden, a popular member of the Hnia Hockey Club, died last night, at the early age of twonty-one years.
