(From Our Special Correspondents,! > « HASTINGS. Tho wet weather, which commenced on Monday week, still continues, and the ground is receiving a capital soaking. As the atmosphere is warm,' there is a very welcome growth already apparent on the pastures. The issue in regard to harbour matters has been simplified by two candidates, who wore standing on Sir. Nelson's ticket (Messrs. S. Clapham and D. Whyte), retiring in favour of the third, Mr. Eustace Lane. The election for tile Hastings representative on tho Ilarbim , Board will now be fought out between Mr. Lane, an inner harbour advocate, and Mr. J. A. Miller, tho present Mayor ; who stands as an Independent, but is recognised as a champion of breakwater interests. For tho Mayoralty tho three- nominees, Messrs. T, J. Thompson, W. Garnett, and W. Lano will face, tho poll.

WOODV'.LLE. Captain Cronin has resigned his position in iho volunteers owing to pressure of' business. A 'welcome "social" was extended to the llov. Mr. Beckett and family on Tuesday evening, at which a large number attended. Sir. J. Harding occupied tho chair. A capital programme was rendered, and, with tl;o speeches ■ from the visitors and officers, a pleasant evening was spent. CARTERTON. Mr. S. Hart, who has been'a resident of Cartertoh for many years, and in fact was one. of the few remaining pioneers of the district, died on Tuesday morning. Eighteen nominations havo been received for tho walking match, from' tho South Street Reserve to tho Kiwitea Bridge and back. Tho race.'is to take place to-day, in. connection with tha Coronation fete which is being; held on tho reserve, us a means of raising funds for tho Beautifying Society.

Tho golf season in Feilding is to open next Saturday with mixed foursomes. '

The Feilding Friendly Societies' Council election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Bio. Meyer, M.U.; vice-president, Bio. A. Nesbit; U.A.0.D.; secretary, Bro. W. Powlcr, A.0.F.; treasurer, Bro W. Allan, M.U. The fixtures for tho card tournament were finally dealt with. Foresters and Oddfellows will commence the tournament on Monday imt in the Oddfellows' Hall, and the tournament will go on weekly throughout the winter. Owing to one of the lodges not being able to raise a shooting team, it was decided to postpone the rifle competition temporarily. .......

Tho following were the loading scorers at tho Rifle Club's meeting on Saturday, the ranges being 200, GOO, and 700 yards :-W. Xix, 31-34-34-93; W. Wakely, 31—35-33-09; Bcnton, 33— 33—30—96; Williams, 34-30-29-93. Tho championship will ho fired for next Saturday. LEVIN. The Mayor (Mr. B. R, Gardener) last evening reviewed the operations of the council since its inception in 100 C, and claimed that excellent work had boon performed. Ho maintained that tho lirst loan in connection with .the reserves was a very satisfactory one, while, tho loan for street repairs was a wiso one, and the fact that the district had now a first-class. water supply had thoroughly justified tho electors in sanctioning the waterworks loan. A large meeting received the Mayor's synopsis with approval.
