ENGLISH MAIL VIA AUCKLAND.

4 WHAT EFFORT , TO CONNECT? There was a good deal of comment on the part of commercial men in Wellington yesterday over the Malieno failing to conneft with the express which left Auckland at 0.15 p.m. on Sunday.

It was stated that tho steamer reached port before 9 o'clock, yet her mails- wore allowed to miss, and, for a few minutes' delay, Wellington Jias to wait another twenty-four hours for its mails. It was pointed out by ono business man that Sunday evening is a qiiiet one over tho railway lines, and, further, that the Main Trunk express can easily pick up an hour or two on Uie run.' . If that is so, he suggests that the express could be delayed for fifteen minutes or oven half an- hour on -i Sunday evening, whenever there is any chance of the connection being made! On . this occasion the Maheno had English and American mails, via Vancouver, an English mail via Suez, and an Australian mail, yet, arriving in the harbour before the. express left, a connection could not be mode.

Tlio frequency with which tho Malieno is responsible for the mail missing is also being remarked upon. This steamer, as a rule, leaves Sydney between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. on tho Wednesday, and yet, with an allowance of over four days for tho trip, she misses connection with the express at Auckland.
