Regarding the wreck of the Portuguese ;fiteamer Lusitania, 5557 tons gross, at Capo Point, during a mist, the captain of the vessel. (Captain da Faria) at first refused to attaudon her. The captain of the British cruiser Forte ■ (Captain J. F. £. Green), which, .with a tui', rescued 800 of the passengers and crew, finally went to the Lusitania in the warship!s cutter and induced Captain da Faria to alter his decision, urging that he should not sacrifice life uselessly. Captain da Faria attributes the vessel's loss to the exceptional inset of the current. The mails were saved. It has been ascertained that four persons were drowned. The South African Assembly discussed the question of tho lowering of'the, Cape Point light, which was frequently obscured. The erection of a lighthouse at Slang Kop was also demanded. Sir John Merriman contended that recent wrecks had been due to careless navigation. Tho Hon. J. W. Sauer, Minister for Railways and Harbours, promised an immediate inquiry.
