UNDESIRABLES AT SCHOOL.
HEADMASTER WHO WELCOMES THEM. The public school in Federal Street, Auckland, of which Mr. W. 11. Draffin is headmaster, says the Auckland "Star," extends its operations beyond the average school. While other schools rid themselves of undesirables, the Federal Street school gets them, hence its teachers havo to specialise in their treatment of each individual case, taking into consideration all the peculiarities of temperament and home surroundings of each child, and this, as the headmaster points out in his annual report, is essential if the teachers are to successfully combat the children's undesirable social conditions, and to fit them for honest work and future good citizenship. "Nothing wo do," he adds, "is done under the guise of charity. While we also help materially we try to indicate self-respect." Mr. Draffin was able to supply instances where boys given up as hopeless cases had "won out" a? the result of their training in the school. .
