THE CENSUS.
SOME EARLY RETURNS. (By Telegraph-Special Correspondent) Danncvlrka, April 21. The census returns give tho population of the borough of Dannevirke at 3374, against 3509 in 1906, a decrease of 135. Of tho present population, 1697 aro females, and 1677 males. Tho population of Danncvirko is set down at. 5079, mado up as follow:—Danncvirko Borough, 3374; Danncvirko Riding, 1518: Norsowood Riding, 1334; Ormondville Riding, 992; Mangatoro Riding, S6l. Thero aro 709 inhabited dwellings in Danncvirko Borough, and 42 uninhabited, whilo six aro being erected. Tho removal of the sawmill industry is given as tho reason of the loss in population in the borough of Dannevirke. This population was to a largo extent of a floating nature, and it amounted to several hundreds. Its place has been almost filled by a. settled class of industry, which is of oven greater benefit to tho district. The town has really sustained no less during tho last quinquennial period. There is much more business transacted than formerly, moro buildings are m occupation, and there is mora settlement. Croymouth, April 21. The population of Groyinouth and suburbs is roughly stated at 12,60' i. The official returns aro not yet available. iTij Tclccrapli-Prc;!! Association 1 Tlmaru, April 21. The census return gives tho population of the borough as 11,311, an increase of 3696 on the last census, but the area has been enlarged in the meantime.
