YOUNG MAORI PARTY.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Napier. April 20. Tho fifteenth conference of the southern division of tho Young Maori Party commenced its session to-day. There was a large attendance representative 'of Maoris from all parts of (He district, in addition to a considerable number of visitors. Speeches of welcome were made by local Maoris, and replied to by visitors. The president (Mr. J, Thornton) in his reply outlined the field of operations of the party, and sketched the programme of tho conference, which promises to be a very successful gathering. Several subjects affecting tho welfare of the Maoris aro down for discussion, and keen debates are anticipated. Amongst the visiting clergy already on the spot are the Revs. W. Pine, Pamahori, and 'feme Hakiwai, and others aro expected. The Hon. A. •1. Ngata, Dr. Wirepa, of Gisborno, Messrs. 11. R. n. Balncavis, H. P. Tomoana, 11. Rireka, Mohi to AtahilfOia, laranaki te Ua, and others are also present. The W.C.T.U. is represented by Miss Rebecca Smith and Aperahama Kcupenla. After the mid-day adjournment, the president delivered his address, ami notices of motion were receiv6d! i'ho conference wiil hold three sittings daily, and will probably lait till Monday next. 3
