ATHLETIC SPORTS.

FOOTBALL. WELLINGTON RUGBY UNION. RECENT ALLEGATIONS. A meeting of the Management Committee of tlie Wellington Rugby Union was hold last evening. There were present: Messrs. S. Brown (chairman), E. 0. Hales, W. Hardhara, J. Burns, Vs. Terry, A. B. Wilson, and W. G. Talbot (secretary). The Upper Hutt Football Club sent a letter nominating a team for the thirdclass championship, and notifying that the club's colours would be black jersey, with gold sash from shoulder to waist. —It was decided to accept the nomination provided that the club were willing to pay 7s. 6d. towards the expenses of every team that journeyed from tho city to Upper Hutt to play there. A Jetter was received from the Thames Kugby Union asking if the Wellington representatives could play their touring team at Wellington, during the coming season.—lt was decided to reply that the request, could not bo entertained, ou account of the many other matches to be played this season.' A communication was received from the Me'lrcse Football Club, in reference to the case of R. Greeks, who had played for Melrose in a practice match early in the season, and had afterwards played for Athletic in tho ?even-a-side tourney. The letter stated that the player in question had been elected a member of the Melrose Club ou March 27, and had played for the club on the following Saturday.—On the motion of Mr. Perry, ,it was decided to inform the- Melrose Club that tho, matter of subscription was one for the club to deal ■with, and that Greeks was eligible to play for the Athbtic Club this season, as ho had not yet taken part in-any club contest.

It was decided to write to Mr. M. Welch, a delegate, asking him to substantiate certain statement* wbich ho made at tjie annual meeting of delegates regarding a bait which it was alleged had been held out to a certain player to play for a local club. During the, discussion at tho meeting of the Wellington Rugby Union on March 29 a statement was made by Mr. Welch (delegate of the Kia Ora Club) to that effect that, two years previously, the Poneke Club, iu order to secure the servicos of a wuior player who had played in two matches for tho Kin, Ora team nt the Hutt, offered to find him a job in Wellington. A number of delegate challenged the statement, lint Mr. Welch declared tint lio had seen tho letter in which the Poneke Club mado the offer he had described. Ho added that the player mentioned accepted the offer, and played in three matches for Poneke. The job. however, was not provided as promised, and he vent away to another district.

.W.F.A. MEETING. The weekly meeting of the Management. Committee of tho Wellington Football Association was held last evening, Mr. H. N. Holmes presiding. Mr. H. Waters wrote tendering his resignation as a member of the Management Committee, owing to pressure of business. Tt was decided that a letter ba forwarded to Mr. Waters stating that his resignation had been accepted with regret; also that he be,"thanked for past services rendered. Tlie matter of appointing another member was held over until next mooting. St. David's Club, Petone, wrote asking the committee to, <-,iake the customary ftrant towards renting the grounds at Petone for tho seasou.—Decided to forward the sum of .£3. TASMANIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS. By Telccraph—Press Association—Copyrieht Hobart, April 19. The State lawn tennis singles championship was won by Parker, who defeated . Hunt. The doubles was won by Parker and Hunt. Mr. G. A. Hurley has written to Mr. F. M. B. Fisher, now in Sydney, asking him to contradict the statement made to "Austral" in the "Referee" to the effect that .'the late Management Committee of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association was put out of office on account of its action re the Davis Cup. Mr. Fisher is chairman of the present Management Committee, and was also at .the time present as a delegate at the-council meeting, when it will be remembered that after being supported by 42 votes to G, the committee would not take office again, although pressed by that majority to do so. THE OTAGO TOURNAMENT. (Bγ Telesraim.—Press Association.) Dunedin, April 19. Tho Otago tennis tournament was continued to-day in splendid weather. The finals of tho ladies' singles championship and combined doubles championship were decided, but some of tho handicap events are yet unfinished. Tho following are the results:— Combined Doubles.—Fourth round: 01livier and Miss Miles beat J. S. Sinclair and Miss Hislop, 6-3, G-0. Semi-final: Ollivier and Miss Miles beat A. D. Calder nnd Miss A. White, by default. Final: Ollivier and Miss Miles beat Tuckir and Miss W. Tucker, 6-4, G-3. Ladies' Singles Championship.—Final: Miss Campbell beat Miss W. Tucker, G—l, 6 —2.

KARORI CLUB "EVENIKG." The Ivarori Hockey Club entertained their junior team (winners of Inst year's championship) at Scott's, Manners Street, last evening- About 35 members of the club were present, Mr. J, C, Cusack pre-

siding, in the unavoidable absence of Mr. C. H. Dickerson, the club's president. A lengthy (oast-list, . including' "The Junior Team, coupled with tho name of Mr. T. Cole (captain)," and "The Wellington Hockey Association," was gone through, and vocal items and recitations helped the evoniug along. Those who contributed to the programmo were: Messrs. Luff, G. Aitken, L. Davies, E. Bailey, L. Hunt, and A. Henderson: The cup won by the team was presented to the captain, Mr. T. Cole, during the evening. Tho record for tho team reads: Twelve matches played, lost none, drawn two j goals for, 49; against, 11.

WEST COAST GAME. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Grcymouth, April 19. C. M. Benzoni yesterday won tho championship singles at bowling from James King, after a keen struggle.

STAKES PAID TO FOGWELL. NEXT RACE ON MANAWATU. lli.v Telecrapb-Press Association.) Chrisichurch, April 19. The stakes of the Fogwell-Whelch match were paid over at a large- gathering of supporters and friends of the scullers in the Oddfellows' Hall, Akaroa, last night. Mr. George Armstrong (Mayor of Aknroa) presided, and in handing the stakes to Fogwell remarked that no doubt the best mau had von on Monday, and there was no man in the professional ranks whom he would as soon see winner of the titlo ns Fogwell, who had made himself very popnlar during his visit to Akaroa. Fogwell, who was roc?ived with enthusiasm, thanked the Mayor for his kind remarks, and expressed his gratitude to the Akoroa people for the many kinduesses which he had received. He said that when he raced Yfhelch previously ho had not been satisfied with his defeat, and whilst over in Wanganui training I'earco Mr. Seifert had seen him and offered to put up the stakes if he would again meet Whelch. The race on Monday had been a hard one, and he felt indebted in a great measure to his trainer, "Jack" Anist, for the satisfactory result. As Mr. Seifert wished it, tho next race would take place on the Manawatu River. Ho specially tliankotl Mr. and Mrs. Halliday, and Messrs. Daly and Vangioni for kindnesses received. Wheleh, in replying, said ho was quite satisfied that he had been beaten by a better man, and he would not vow any more. He had done all he could to uphold the honour of the town, and concluded with the rcmaTk that ho had not left one stone unturned to win the race. Fogwell's backer. Mr. Seifert. stated that, when ho saw Fogwell at Wanganui he thought that ho had found a mau who could bring the championship to the Manawatu. He was willing to back Fogwell against any sculler except "Dick" 1 Mr.'M. G. Daly (Whelch's backer) stated that over one thousand pounds had been raised locally within the last three years to back the local champion, the lists bsin? headed and topped" by tho Mayor. Referring to Fogwel!, he said that the latter was a good sport, and they all liked him. Ho was sorry that they lind last the championship course from Aknron. but the best mau had won, and they all hoped that he would retain the title for some time. At the conclusion cheers were given for tho scullers.

GOVERNOR PRESENTS A TROPHY. (By Telegraph.—Prosa Association.) ' Auckland, April 19. With a view to reviving interest in class yacht-racing, his Excellency tho Governor, Lord Islington, has intimated to the Commodore of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (Mr. Blcomfield) his intention to present a; "challenge* trophy to the squadron for competition under tho rules for the time being in force. The trophy will bo devoted to ono of the metro class which have been adopted for special encouragement by the squadron, and tho class will be decided on by the committee as early as convenient.

EXCITING TIME IN THE STRAIT

YACHT RONA IN A GALE. Among the passengers by tho Pateena from Picton on Tuesday evening last were the crew and owner (Mr. A. Petherick) of tho yacht Rona, which put back to Tory Channel, (luring tho Cnusiug Club's ocean race, across the strait, from Port Underwood. The Eona loft Port Underwood in company with the White Heather at 9.20 a.m. on Easter Monday, both, yachts racing from scratch. Tho Eona held her own for' a while, and then gradually drew away from the Heather, tho latter being well to windward. By this time tlio yacht was off Tongue Point, and she began to ship seas very frequently. Oneof the crow was kept continually bailing out the cockpit, but could not cope witii (he amount of water coming in. The cabin was eventually about half full, anrt the cockpit full. At about 2 p.m. the waiter rigging carried war, and tho yacht was immediately put about. The peak was eased up and tho yacht made for Tory Channel. Tho crew then commenced baiting with buckets and pumping, and, in a short time, the yacht was fairly dry. At 5.30 p.m. she arrived at the channel, and anchored opposite Mr. Baxter's residence. Mr. Baxter came out in a dinghy and took the crew ashore, and madu them comfortable at his house for the night. In the morning they were vea'ly to start again, and left for Picton, whore, after securely mooring the yacht, they came ashore to await the arrival of the Pateena. Mr. Pethorick will proceed to Pi 3. ton on Saturday to bring the Eona back Tho yacht Patronus arrived from I'ort Underwood yesterday at noon.
