A lecture was delivered in Berlin recently by Dr. Martienscn on tno gyroscopic lompass, which, it is claimed, will be of the utmost utility to shipping. In modern battleships and in some ot tho large merchant vessels constructed of steel, the magnetic compass is liable to disturbances from which, it is said, the gyroscopic compass is entirely free. The German naval authorities are taking great interest in tho new instrument. At the present time there ia no reason to' think that it will completely displace the magnetic compass, although when certain imperfections of the gyroscopic compass are removed, it is believed that a great step forward will be made in the technics of navigation. OIL-ENGINED STEAMERS. The oil-cngined vessel Toiler, built by Messrs. Swan, Hunter, and Wigham Richardson, of Wallsend, England, is intended for service on the Canadian canals. Sho was designed by Messrs. John Reid and Company, of Montreal, and tho introduction of oil engines has effected a great saving of space and dead weight. She will bo the first gas or oil propelled Ehip to cross the Atlantic. Mr. W. Eussell Ferguson, managing .director of Messrs. Barclay, Curie and Company, of Glasgow, recently gave somo particulars of a. large oil-engined vessel which tho firm is building for foreign owners. The new ship will bo of 5000 tons gross, will have twin screws, and a speed of 12 knots, and engines of tho Diesel type. It is estimated that 100 tons of oil will carry her as far as 300 tons of-coal will carry a, steamer of the same size. There will bo accommodation on board tho vessel for a few passengers.
