The peace of residents of Amy Street, Knrori, was suddenly disturbed at about 3 o'clock yesterday morning by a fire which made its appearance in a house of fivp rooms owned by Mr. James Bnmger and occupied by a Mr. Sweeney. It appears that Sweeney had been away for some time, only returning on Tuesday to his residence. The explosion of a kerosene lamp in a ground floor bedroom of the. 7-roomed house in Ghusneo Street, occupied by Mr. W. H. Kewson, caused an outbreak of fire at 5.5 p.m. yesterday. The room and its contents were damaged by fire and water. Tho contents were insured in tho United Office for £V2b. A "VACUUM CLEANER" BURNED. An unusual accident befel the Vacuum Cleaning Company's neat little, outfit in Thompson Street shortly after 8 o'clock last evening. The wagon, which contained a petrol-driven engine and dust reservoir, in proceeding up that steep thoroughfare after the day's work, had the misfortune to capsize when opposite Mr. John Kirkcaldie's residence. The attendant obtained a kerosene lamp to assist him in righting the wagon, and the flame coming in contact with the vapour from tho spilt petrol, ignited the whole outfit, which was seriously damaged. Tho outfit was a Brussels Exhibition prize model and had'been imported recently at considerable expense.
