THE KING AND THE CHURCH
"ASSISTANCE TO PURIFY AND ENNOBLE LIFE." The King, in replies to tho Convocations of Canterbury and York, promised to assist tho labours of the Cliurc); "to purity and ennoble the public and private life of the nation." Both the Convocations presented addresses. Tho King received the deputations of tho Archbishops, Bishops, and others at Buckingham Palace, and replied to the addresses as follows:— Convocation of Canterbury. "You may count upon my assistance in tho labours of tho, Church to purify and ennoble the public and private life of tho nation and to seek the consolations of Christian truth in their simplicity and perfection. I know that tta Church is turning her mind with a vivifying energy to the problems of poverty and destitution to which you particularly refer, and that her hands aro extended in Christian comradeship to all good men of every creed or partv who are striving to raise tlie standards of health' and morals and to make our country a home for all its people." Convocation of York. "I value your appreciation of my wish to follow tho illustrious example of my father in discharging the duties and responsibilities to which I have succeeded. It will always bo my endeavour, with God's help, to maintain and consolidate tho foundations of public and private virtue which you labour to preserve and on which the welfare of my people rests."
