AUTUMN MEETING. GUNBOAT .WINS THE HANDICAP. Steady rain fell at Tauherinikau all Satnrtlay morning mid had the effect of ;onsidcrably curtailing the attendance at the alitumn meeting of the Wairarapa Itaciiig Club. Tiie going soon became false but though ' some fair fields faced the starter, only ouo horso fell during tho day. Tho racing was interesting mid some , good performances were put up. Sea Queen, who is owned by a Wellington sportsman, scored a popular win in the Wardell Handicap, alter slipping badly and. losing several .lengths at the halfway. Gunboat won the- principal handicap, with about a stone in. hand. Down the back his rider' had a big hold on him and once his head was loosed he simply bolted. Both he and Sea Queen will want substantial rises to stop them to-day.. Tho running of Sinapis in the Juvenile Handicap was most unsatisfactory and his rider, ■ after getting out well, seemed to take things ver.y leisurely. Several reputed totalisator bettors wen; removed from the ground during* the day. One of them, who owns a horse, refused to leave the ground when requested to do so. The whole of the acceptors went to th< post.in the Trial Hack Handicap. 4< was anticipated,,Kohupatiki was favourite but he made a poor showing, and finiskee well in the ruck-. At the start San Porl led, with the favourite in the rear. A'crosi the bottom straight Beulah fell, and in terfered with several of the' rear division ban Port' easily held his own in lh< run home',, and-won comfortably. It wai a good-face for second place.' Bonnie Boj was close- up fourth. Varna broke 't blood-vessel, .and had to be pulled up. ' (uinboat,; who bears the reputation oi being good in the mud, was the besi in the Easter Handicap, and In won handily after being in a winning position any part of the last six fur longs. Aimwell made the pace, with Gunboat and Hilarian in the rear.- At tht six furlongs Kill was second, just clear oi Otuuboat, but the latter headed the chestnut, mare at the turn, and Von comfortably. Kill has been up no time aftei a spell and.is not ready. .Rauparaha finished well, but the distance was not fai enough. Passive and Hanupai both raad< poor showings. ■ . Merry Lad and Tcel "disputed favouritism in the Hack Welter, for which Merrk Ply for once was persuaded to" leave the barrier. He nnd Merry Lad soon had n big break on the-field, but both stopped across the bottom, and-,th0,,-fiel.d-jclosed up. .Merry Lad was first into tho straight! but his rider appeared to be uneasy on him. 'However,.-he lasted it out and won by a couple of -lengths. Vite was a neck in front of Astonishment. ,'.'"■ '■ ' • ; Bracken was withdrawn in favour of Beacon from the Wangaimoana Handicap, for which' Succession was slightly better backed than the . Euroclydon gelding. Afterthought and Succession were soon in front, and, with Beacon ahead of the remainder, they raced to : the turn. Ballyihannon then challenged,' and though he ;oon collared the others he could make no impression on Afterthought. Mataari, Lochiela, and' Clem were in the rear the ivholo way. Succession tired to nothing in the straight. • ' Tho result of the Nursery Handicap vas a boil-over. Several of the runners ivere well backed, and.tho winner turnid up in Blue Lake, a rather useful filly ly Royal Fusilier, who formerly was nyned by Mr. E. J. Watt, but is now the iroporty of Mr. E, Lonergan. She held :econd position at the turn,, and in the straight buried Odessa, who was in the ead. Lady Kilcheran ran well to tho ;urn, but'tho, form of Sinapis was too Dad to be true, and sho may do better tolay. Confusion, a green gelding by Boris, ran very well at the home turn, iml after passing the post his rider was lnseated, but was unhurt. Sea Queen was always favourite in the fVardell Handicap, and at the start of the jetting it looked as if she would be one >f the hottest favourites on record. At he start Bracken led her, but soon Similex headed the favourito and led with 3racken to the turn. Here the field swept vide,-and. Lady Moutoa slinned up on the ■ails, but shp could not sustain her run. 'n tho straight .Bracken and Simolex topped badly, and Sea Queen came" on ilone. British Maid just beat Splash for econd honours. Merry Frank, who has >een up- no time, was in tho rear the rholo way. The Trentham-trained Septimus was the >est backed of the eleven starters in the itakahi Hack Handicap. As usual, he was oon out in front, but slinped about a food deal, and across the bottom straight iis rider had great difficulty in keeping lim on his feet. At the home turn LongI'ood, Stourton. Tulloch Ard, nnd ITndeided all put in claims. Traill finished ■cry stronsly on Longwooii. who gained . half-length victory. Tulloch Ard, who iatl been prominent the while way, just asted long enouili to beat "Undecided for econd place. Smart's gelding was most inlucky, and came from last place in :bout two furlongs. TO-DAY'S RACE MEETINGS.
At Tauherinikau to-day the Wairarapa Racing Club's autumn nieeting will be concluded. Special train arrangements have been made for tho convenience of city people, and another good day's racing is promised. In the absence' of W. Ryan at Christchurch, the Porirua apprentice, L. Traill, will ride Sea Queen and the Endeavour Lodge candidates in addition to Longwood and Longstep. Ryan left for the south on Saturday night in company with C. Emerson. The Feilding Jockey Club's meeting op-ens at Feilding to-day, when the Feilding Cup will be decided. A feature of the meeting will be the race for the Mangaono Stakes, in which Full Rate, Equitas, Lord Soult, Tigerino, and several other good sprinters are engaged. W. Young and S. Reid, who were riding at Tauherinikau on Saturday, motored through yesterday to Feilding, where the former will ride John in the Cup, while Reid will have the mount on Full Rate in the Mangaone Stakes. At Ellerslie, the Auckland Racing Club's meeting will be continued. Among the events to be decided is the Great Northern Champagne Stakes, in which the Yaldhurst candidate, Orton, is to bo ridden by A. Oliver. Smaller race meetings will be held at Patea and Wnipukurau in tho North Island. In the South Island sporting men will assemble chiefly at Kiccarton, where the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting commences. Amongst events to be decided to-day nro the Great Easter Handicap and the Champagne Stakes, while tomorrow the Great Autumn Handicap and the Challenge Stakes come up for decision. No report of Saturday's track-work is to hand, and the report of Friday's work shows that most of the horses were restricted to light work, though Obsoiio (H. Donovan) shaped brilliantly by leaving three furlongs behind in 3G 4-ssec. The connections of Obsono nro very pleassed with the way the horse is going, but it is anticipated that he will have considerable trouble in defeating My Lawyer, who was breaking records on the track before ho left for Riccarton. Both Christchurch' morning papers state .ttuii the unbeaten thrcD-year-old Danube show-, ed signs of. soreness on the tracks on Friday morning. Tho Australian Jockey Club's big race at Hamhviek to-day is the Sydney Cup, two miles, in which the New Zealaudoivned Bridge will probably start favourite. Added interest is given lo this event by tho presence of Bridge in the field, and also by tho fact (hat a New /cnlnndbred horse. Broiulsword, won (ho first .leg of the double, tho Doncastcr Handicap.
RACING COMMISSION. , Mr. A. E. Cohen, a member of Iho Racing Commission, has fi\en the JJiiiicdin "btar" 6omo information about the work accomplished. The commission''found the racecourses - in various stages of perfection and neglect. ."Ellerslie," says Mr. Cohen, "is an ideal courso, which compares favourably with Flemiugton in its appointments. At the time of our viMt a live furlong course was being prepared, at a cost of JC3OOO, exclusively for the training of tiro-year-olds. Mind, exclusively for their training! Some of the courses, on the other hand, were sadly neglected. On one, (he only 'improvement' was a judge's box, sole designation of the use to which the ground was put. There you have the best and the worst," The commissioners were distinctly impressed by the beautiful snrroumlings'of the Tauheririikan course, where nikau and climbing rata made a picturesque 'background; and by the siables and jockeys' fjuartcrs, which wero a feature at Timaru. In one respect, the commission found something novel at Hokitika, in tho guise of n special stand for patients from the local mental hospital—a privilege greatly enjoyed by such patients as were permitted to attend the meetings. The commission was originated under the Gaming Act of last session, under which the Governor-in-Council was empowered to appoint a commission of five persons to report with a view to restricting the number of days' racing and trotting by fifty-four, thus bringing the total number of days of racing down to 250. The commissioners selected weio Sir Geo. Clifford (chairman), Messrs. ,T. Rowe (Auckland), E. H." Nolan (Hawora), J. M'Vay (Napier), and A. E. Cohen (Dunedin). The investigations made by these gentlemen in their scurry through the country v;ero in respect of tho history of clubs, ago of courses, area of ground, financial position of clubs, contiguity to other courses, and a host of other details which will heli) them in their delicate task, which may include tho abolition or absorption of some of the clubs. The commission reassembles in Wellington on May 8.
