A tragitv illustration of the trials and sufferings frequently experienced by backblocks pioneers is shewn in the case of Mr: and Mrs. Erni and their family residing at tho Mangaohutu Valley, thirty miles down the Wanganui. Kiver from Taumarunui. Last week one of their five children was stricken with diphtheTia, and died before it could bo brought to the lowu. . The body, however, was conveyed m by the father and mother after a Ion.? and weary boat journey, and interred in the Taumarunui Cemetery Returning to their home, the parents found that two other of their children had become afflicted with the disease and without waiting for a. boat, hdrses wore procured, and tho patients were brought in to Eanrimii, a distance of 28 mile* and then on to the Taumarunui Hospital' where another of the children died It is a sad case.
