Fasnakyle accepted for the Sockburn Handicap. NOTES AND COMMENTS. FBy Gmxcoe.j Nominations for tho Marlborough Racing Club'n autumn meeting, to be held at Riverlands on May 3 and 4 close to-night with Mr. L. Griffiths, secretary, Blenheim. Instead of closing at 9 p.m., as has been usual, the club lias, this yea-r, extended the hour of closing until midnight. The Australian Jockey Club's autumn meeting opens at Randwick • to-day, when the Doncaster "Handicap and the Autumn Stakes are amonc; the events to he decided. A number "of New Zea-land-bred horses are engaged in tho Doncaster Handicap' and in the other events. Local followers of racing howover, will bo chiefly interested "in tho Autumn Stakes m which tho wellknown performer, Lady Medallist, will bo opposed to the best wcight-for-a«o horses in tho Commonwealth, notably Comedy King and Trafalgar. Two local owners, who mado tho trip to the Groymouth meeting last week ns.a exasperating experiences. Mr D Jtoan, ownor of Hcreward, was on the. ATalHira, which was bar-bound outsido tho port, aud consequently he was unable to be present, and his horso was scratched. Messrs. J. and V. O'Ncfll owners of Ovcrhca'rd, also sent their horso by tho Arahurn, though they went overland themselves. . H Tclford, who is to ride Mcrrivonia in tho Great. Easter Handicap at Hic-ou-ton. loft for tho south by the Marama on Thursday night. T." Piitchard also went south on Thursday to rido ' Penates and Gold Bird.

Molologue has been scratched for all engagements at the Wairarapa Racing Club's meeting. Nominations for the Wanganui Jockey Club's winter meeting close next Friday. Septimus and Succession, two members of A. Goodman's Trentham team, iverp railed to i'aiihorinikaii on Thursday. Tho good showing of the former in bis Awapiini engagements will probably have the effer't of making Tho Officer gelding a pronounced favourite in tho Makalii ?iack Hacc to-day. This .event, is run over a live-furlong course, and Septimus was just beaten In a sixfurlong race, run in lmin. 14-l-osec. at Awapiini. H. Gray is to ride Colleen Mary and V ice-Admiral in the C.J.C. double. Kohupatiki, the bob-tniled full-bro-ther to Ataahua, will meet a very moderate lot in the Trial Hack Handicap at Tauherinikau to-day. When racing m much better company at Napier last month the son of Mahaki made a good showing on both days. Tigerine, who is engaged in the Mangrove Stakes at Foildiii!*, lias ■ been doing excellent work at Hastings. Not the least interesting featuro of Monday's race meetings will be a comparison of the totalisator figures for Auckland, Feilding, and Riecarton. At Foilding and Ellerslie, tho clubs will be working onco more without the bookmakers, so that big figures are sure to bo recorded on tlie machine. In the days before the bookmaker was licensed, tho Feilding totalisator figures used to compare very favourably with both Riecarton and EUorslie, but the opening of the Main Trunk railway no doubt means a gain to Auckland at holiday time, and a corresponding loss to Feilding. However, after taking everything into consideration, an informant who understands racing and racing clubs from A to Z expressed the opinion to tho writer that the investments on the machine at Foilding on Easter Monday will be greater than those at Ellorslie or Riecarton. We shall see. . Though he has not so far been mentioned in the market quotations for tho Easter Handicap at Ellerslie, it is quite probable that, when tho betting closes to-day, the_ Karamu three-year-old colt, Formby, will be well supported on tho machine. The bay son of Birkcnhead has everything in his favour in tho matter of weight,'and, were he to reproduce his spring form, ono might expect him to win. Three-year-olds have been successful in tho Easter Handicap many times, and have mostly carried biz weights. There was, for example, Advance with Ost. 61b. in 1900. Nonetto Ost. 111b. in 1902, and Gold Crest 9st. in 1908, to say nothing of Daystar, Mobility, and Aborigine. As a two-year-old, Formby was tho best of his year, and that means that he was superior to Danube, who has not been beaten as a thrcc-year-old. At Riecarton last' November, Formby commenced his three-year-old career very well by carrying 7st. and running a srood second to Madam Madcap (6st." 181b.') in tho Jockey Club Handicap, tho mile being covered in the fast time of lmin. 40 2-osoc. When one makes due allowance for tho improvement made by a three-year-old from the spring to the autumn. Formby, with 7st. 61b., must be considered easily the best-handi-capped horse at Ellerslie, even if some of his summer performances were poor. Tho Russley Plate—a handicap over five furlongs, for two-year-olds, which is run at Riccarton on Monday—should be a very fast race, for the field contains amongst others Aphaea, Royal Scotch, and Mazurka, the respective representatives of the Stead, Watt, and Greenwood stables, all bearing tho reputations of being record-breakers.

Judging by his excellent track work, it would seem as if Turbine is back to his spring form, when the Menschikoff gelding was carrying lOst. odd in his r,aces and beating everything lie me.t. ■m%& Train way Handicap at Ellerslio to-day, he has only 9st. lib. to carry— a weight that should be a positive luxury to him. It is a very weak field that is opposed to him, as; outside St. Bill, who is close up in the weights, the others are mediocre.

Since joining M. M'Grath's stablo at Opaki, the Calibro gelding Gunboat has failed to win n race, but, on se-vcral occasions,! ho has been close up to tho winners of races run in fast time. His principal failures have been recorded in races over seven and eight furlongs, and it has always been noticeable how fast he finished. In the Final , Welter at Awapuni (won by Mcroze in lmin. 42seci, the fastest gallop of the meeting), Gunboat was only half a length away, and was going the better of the pah\ at tho finish. To-day he is in a race that should suit him, and that is the Easter Handicap (one mile and a distance) at Tauherinikau. This will give the bay gelding plenty of time to get on his feet beforo the serious part of the business commences.

Tho Greymouth meeting will be brought to a conclusion to-day.

Among candidates that have been impressing track watchers at Ellerslie is the Soult filly Lucille, who is engaged in the Gore-Brown Handicap to-day. As a two-year-old, Lucille started several times without winning a race, but she has been showing improved form this season.

The steeplechaser Tβ Arai is at present on the sick list, and his trip to Australia bas been postponed.

If any of the Auckland candidates is to be favourite for the Easter Handicap it will probably be Kakama, who showed brilliant form on each day of the last Auckland Cup meeting. The Soult mare has been doing capital track work, and, as she is to have the services of B. Deeley, she will lack nothing on the score of horsemanship.
