NEW TELESCOPE-ITS HOUSING.

POSSIBLY AT KELBURNE. A meeting of i!ie astronomical section of tho Philosophical Society was held in the Museum last evening', Dr. Hector presiding over a gathering of about 20 members. A lecture was given by Professor Pieken, of Victoria College, oa Spherical Geometry and Trigonometry. At tho conclusion of tho address there was a short discussion and the lecturer was given a hearty vote of thanks.

A general discussion took place on the establishment of an observatory for the o-inch reflecting telescope, a sum of £35 for the purpose being in hand. Dr. Kennedy stated that he supposed they must necessarily aim at something economical. Ho did not know whether it wasi intended to put up merely a houso for the instrument or one for observation as well. In his opinion they might put up a small shelter shod for the- instru-: ment, which could be brought out when, it was required. If an observatory was' to be built, it might be constructed with a sliding roof. Mr. La Trobe produced a plan of a scheme which he thought might be suitable. It was decided to appjy for the use of a spot in the military reserve, ICelburne, and, in the event of the request being granted, to visit the site before takiim action.
