GENERAL FARMING NEWS.
News by the American mail which arrived yesterday says that Missouri Chief Josephine, born on tho College farm at Columbia, Missouri, and the world's champion cow for six, eight, ten, and eleven months, will lie carried 011 a special train over'the Frisco, Wabash, and Burlington .Railroad lines in Missouri. University authorities will take this means of giving the citizens of Missouri an opportunity of seeing this famous cow. On this spccial train six teachers from tho College of Agriculture will give, instructions on soils, farm crops, dairying, and better live stock. The first town was to be started on February 21. Speaking at a dinner tendered the jSlinistcr tor Agriculture at Stratford, Mr. . Jacob Marx, of Mangatoki, said ho did not think that there was land in any part of New Zealand that so readily responded to cultivation as Taranaki land. It was really wonderful what Could bo achieved by more cultivation and manuring—-intensive farming. He had a 20l)-aero farm; his sons had farms of 50 acrcs each. They could beat him by as much as £2 an aero in what they took from it. Iu regard to the pig industry, the Dominion should try and emulate Denmark, which secured 10s.'from pigs for every £1 from dairy 'produce. Oil '.his scalc Taranaki should "export annually pigs to the value of £700,000. In regard to testing cows, he thought the weakness lay in not branding the "duffer" animals. _ Something ought to be done in that direction.
